Rush. The word itself has so many implications that it's hard to tell why it's even called rush in the first place.

Sixty-One and Then Some

If there is one thing that has captured the attention and imagination of the American public over the last few months, it would have to be the chase to break Roger Maris' single-season baseball home run record of 61, and who would be the man to perform the feat first: Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa or President Clinton?

Water Polo makes big splash with four wins

|

The Dartmouth Men's Water Polo team got off to a 4-0 start at a home tournament this weekend in their first attempt as returning National Club Water Polo champions. The Big Green -- who are currently ranked number one in the nation, ahead of such teams as the University of Michigan and the University of Colorado -- knocked off Trinity College, Yale University, Amherst College and long-time rival Williams College in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's qualifying tournament. Led by the offensive skill of co-captain Ken Kriwanek '99 and Ryan Utsumi '01, and supported by the defensive stability of co-captain Danny Alfonso '99 and goalie Matt Nelson '00, Dartmouth easily defeated an out-paced Trinity squad.

Internships and Disillusionment

Sometimes it's hard not to be embarrassed that I'm American. The young, promising melting pot that humbly braved all odds to establish itself as a superpower no longer completely impresses me.

Student Assembly fills key positions

|

The Student Assembly approved the nominations of Teresa Knoedler '00 and Jake Shields '99 to fill the positions of student life and administrative and faculty relations chairs respectively at its first meeting of the year last night. Student Assembly President Josh Green '00 departed from established Assembly tradition this year by soliciting student involvement in selecting the student life committee chair nominee, an influential and well-known post within the Assembly's executive committee. In past years, the Assembly president nominates all committee positions without an open search. The Assembly publicized the unique, open nomination process last Spring term and Green selected Knoedler as the eventual nominee. "I think the process worked very well," Green said.

A Cheesehead Far from Home

|

Although never ashamed of my Midwestern roots, I rarely have felt a strong sense of state pride. In fact, I never even understood how such a feeling could exist. Born in Iowa, I was surrounded by what seemed like millions of very proud Iowans, proud that the corn was taller there than in Illinois, Missouri or Minnesota, and proud to see "joy in every hand," as the state song explains. Even in this most superficial and unimportant sense, that strong statewide community feeling always struck me as ridiculous.

Escape the Crowds of Food Court

|

I just got back from Food Court, and it was far from a pretty experience. I cannot recall a single time last year when Food Court was so claustrophobic and when its lines were so beastly, but this past week, Food Court has been a trauma and a half.
