Women's Rugby
Coming off their first berth and a seventh-place finish at the national
championships last spring, the Dartmouth Women's Rugby Club scored an easy victory on Saturday over a scrappy Boston College club, 56-5. Under scorching heat and humidity, the DWRC showed all exactly why they are one of the top teams in the country, executing plays with precision and overpowering the BC forwards all day long.
Dartmouth scored first as fly-half and back's captain Rachel Moss '99 sold the opposition two dummies, slipping through a hole. Scrum-half Scotty McConnaughey '99, who followed closely behind, scooped a pass to wing Stacy Davis '99, who later scored a hat trick, and the rout was on.
Men's Rugby
Captain and flyhalf Mark Oldham '99 scored two tries to lead Dartmouth to a 46-5 win over UMass in a New England Premier League match. Flanker Alex Magleby '00 also had two tries for the Big Green who are now 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the league.
The big UMass pack wheeled a Dartmouth scrum in the opening minutes but scrumhalf Carlos Escobar '00 got the ball out to Oldham. Winger Don Phillibert '99 came in the line and and center Mark Kowalsky '99 drove over in the ruck. The ball went wide to center Mike Evans '00 who ran into a gap and sprinted 50 meters for the try. Fullback Scott Whiting '99 kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead that would be more than enough for the Big Green, who went on to add 27 unanswered points. Dartmouth held UMass scoreless until late in the game.
