Tigers lax advance to NCAA final

Five goals by freshman Sean Hartofilis helped the third-ranked Princeton men's lacrosse team overcome a late three-goal deficit to edge the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers, 12-11, in the NCAA semifinal game.

Crimson meet an Okie demise

The Ivy League champion Harvard Crimson softball squad (11-1 in Ivy play) found the confines of Norman, Oklahoma a bit less friendly than those of familiar Ivy League stadiums, and the results show that. The Crimson, the lone Ivy representative to the NCAA Regional, were eliminated in two straight games, falling to host Oklahoma University 11-0 a week ago Thursday and Northwestern 9-6 last Friday. Harvard had the misfortune of drawing the national powerhouse Sooners, ranked fourth in the country, in the first round on their home turf.

Princeton women drop lax championship 16-8

It could have been us there. The Princeton women's lacrosse team made a valiant run to the NCAA finals, but fell in the championship game to the first-ranked Maryland Terrapins 16-8 on Sunday. Dartmouth's own women defeated the Tigers 16-13 in overtime back on April 22 to claim the 2000 Ivy League championship.

Banghart, Weitzel, Brooks, Meyer receive athletic awards

The Dartmouth athletic department announced major athletic awards at a ceremony on Monday to a number of outstanding Big Green athletes. Courtney Banghart '00 (Basketball) Banghart crowned two awards as she received the Class of 1976 Award (as Dartmouth's most distinguished female athlete selected by the coaches of women's varsity teams) and the Agnes B.

Additions named to athletic department

The Dartmouth athletic department added two new staff members yesterday as they named Chad Brown to assistant football coach and Mike King to assistant director of sports information. Brown, a 1998 graduate of Purdue University, will join the football staff as tight ends coach.

Track and field shines at champs

Although sparse in numbers, the track and field team journeyed to New Jersey this past weekend for the 124th IC4A Track and Field Championships and the 17th ECAC Women's Division I Track and Field Championsips, both hosted by Princeton May 18-21. "A lot of people were pleased with how Heps went and wanted to end their seasons on a good note there," said women's co-captain Margie Van Orden '00, referring to the Heptagonal Championships held last weekend at the University of Pennsylvania. Team members, who did make the trip to Princeton, made strong showings,as they competed in a field of over 1000 athletes representing 81 IC4A teams and 69 ECAC teams. Brooke Derham '02 posted the Big Green's best overall finish of the weekend, with a fourth-place showing in the javelin at 135-0. Allison Cardlin '01 secured fifth in the shot put (45-11 1/4), and Betsy Beck '00 took eigth in the pole vault at 11-3 1/2. For the men's team, Adam Horst '00 turned in a fifth-place performance in the decathlon, amassing 6,467 points. Teammates Matt Markell '01 (6371 points) and Joe Kimpel '03 (5983 points) finished in seventh and ninth place, respectively. Also scoring for the Big Green was Ryan Padilla '00, who ran the 5000 in 14:41:23 to take eigth place overall.

Crew races at Eastern Sprints

The Dartmouth freshman lightweight eight captured a silver medal yesterday, giving them the best finish for the Big Green at the Eastern Sprints Regatta, held in Worcester, Mass. Dartmouth, seeded third in the race, finished only a second to first-place Princeton and overtook Yale for the second sport.
