Cornell, Princeton lead Ivies in field hockey

In a week filled mostly by non-league play, Cornell moved into a tie with the Princeton Tigers for first place in the Ancient Eight with a 3-0 League record. Princeton fell for the first time this season to number one-ranked Maryland.

Maryland 2, Princeton 0

The eighth-ranked Tigers (5-1, 3-0) fell to the Terrapins last Friday in New Jersey, marking Princeton's first loss of the season.

The first half was scoreless, but Maryland put the ball in the cage three minutes into the second half. The Terrapins scored once more, with 23 minutes remaining in the game, to put the final score at 2-0.

The Tigers' goalkeeper, sophomore Kelly Baril, made 14 saves.

Cornell 2, Yale 1

The Big Red faced the traveling Bulldogs on Saturday, improving their Ivy record and moving into a first-place tie in the league with Princeton.

Cornell tallied the first goal of the game at the 21:34 mark. The goal came off of a penalty corner shot that had rebounded from the pads of Yale's goalkeeper, freshman Krissy Nesburg.

In the second half, Cornell senior Catherine Kelly increased the Big Red lead to 2-0 in the first few minutes of play. Yale sophomore Christine Anthony cut the deficit down to one, but the strong Cornell defense held the Bulldogs to one goal.

Yale outshot Cornell 12-11 in the game. Sullivan made seven saves in goal for Cornell, while Nesburg saved 6 shots.

Brown 4, Rutgers 1

The Bears hosted the Scarlet Knights on Sunday, tallying a convincing victory.

Brown junior Lauren LaRochelle scored the Bears' first goal with 27:12 left in the first half. Rutgers kept their deficit at one for most of the first half, but Brown junior Hyun-Joo Park put in another tally seven minutes before the break.

In the second half, the Bears continued their offensive domination. In the first few minutes, senior Cara Gardner scored the Bears' third goal in a one-on-one with Rutgers' goalie Abby Joseph. Brown freshman Laurel Pierpoint scored her team's final goal of the game fifteen minutes later.

The Knights' Adrienne Booth put in a score for her team with ten minutes left to play, but there was no comeback in store for Rutgers. Brown's Owens racked up six saves in the game.

UNH 4, Harvard 3

Harvard traveled to New Hampshire on Sunday for a match against the Wildcats. The Crimson walked away in defeat.

UNH took control of the game in the first half, scoring two goals at the 22- and 15-minute marks.

In the second half, Harvard junior Katie Turck reduced the deficit to one at the 4:50 mark. UNH scored two more goals in the middle of the half, putting the score at 4-1. Harvard senior Kate Nagle put in another goal with seven minutes left to play, and freshman Maria vanWagonburg cut the deficit down to one with 1:20 remaining. However, though Harvard pressured in the last minute, the time ran out before a tying goal was scored.

Zacarian made five saves for the Crimson.

Ivy play continues next Saturday, when Brown faces Columbia, Cornell travels to meet Harvard and Dartmouth hosts Yale.
