Catamounts upset baseball 7-5

|

University of Vermont broke a 5-5 tie on the top of the ninth inning when Dan Ruane hit a deep double to center field and the Catamounts went on to beat the Big Green, 7-5. Dartmouth dropped its season record to 13-11, while Vermont improved to 15-8. After UVM took a 3-0 lead, Jason Dacosta '03 batted in two runs in the second inning and junior catcher Mike Levy reached home on three Vermont errors to tie the game. The game was tied again at five after five innings, and Dartmouth struggled to beat Vermon'ts relief pitcher Brian Robinson, who allowed only one hit. Freshman Brian Gattis started on the mound for the Green and he pitched five innings while allowing three earned runs. Relief pitcher Michael Brown '02 took over for Gattis in the sixth inning.

Dartmouth baseball, behind the run production of leaders Brian Nickerson '00 and James Little '00, wasted no time gaining five runs in the first inning off Columbia right hander Ryan Kiernan.

Is Sports Illustrated Right?

Once again, the focus of the American League will be the AL East. The continuing saga of the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will propel sports analysts around the country to ask, "Is this Boston's year?" More so than ever this is the year to wonder whether Boston can escape the dreaded Curse of the Bambino, but the Bosox will first need to slip past the most formidable team in baseball. With the acquisition of centerfielder Carl Everett from Houston, the Sox may have found the missing piece of the puzzle.

Princeton 10, Brown 7 Fourth-ranked Princeton extended its Ivy League consecutive win streak to 28 Saturday afternoons with a 10-7 victory over 15-ranked Brown. The game started out close, with the two teams battling to a 4-4 stalemate at halftime.

Weekend home games: Equestrian hosts show

Baseball Red Rolfe Division leader Dartmouth (3-1 Ivy, 10-9 Overall) hosts is first home series of the season against Lou Gehrig Division leaders--Pennsylvania (3-1, 10-8) tomorrow and Columbia (3-1, 4-19) on Sunday. Probable starters for tomorrow's games are Conor Brooks '00 and Jim Kelly '03 against Penn, and John Velosky '02 and Jeff Dutremble '01 are probable starters for Sunday. Kelly earned Ivy Pitcher of the Week award last week with a victory over last year's Gehrig Division champ, Princeton.
