Why I love playoff hockey

|

About this time of year, I am always reminded why I am a hockey fan. Just as the nascent baseball season begins to wake me from my neutral-zone trap inspired coma, and move me to thoughts of sunny weekend afternoons sitting in the bleachers at Fenway, the NHL playoffs come along and re-ignite my passions for the sport of the great white north.

Baseball KOs Yalies for sweep

It was a struggle, especially in the second game of a double-header against Yale, but the Dartmouth baseball team reeled off its tenth and eleventh consecutive victories on Monday at home to match a school record.

Sailors qualify for ICYRA championships

|

This weekend the women's lacrosse team was not the only team laying claim to the label "dynasty." The Big Green women's sailing team won the New England Women's Championship Reed Trophy on Sunday for the second consecutive year, qualifying for the ICYRA National Dinghy Championship in the process. Dartmouth overcame inclement weather on the Charles River in Boston to finish first in the field of 17 schools with 123 points.

Street fightin' men

Saturday evening, several friends and I were sitting in my dorm room watching a muted "Sportscenter" on ESPN (yes, I have cable in my room) as the stereo was turned up, and probably irritating the guy next door.

W. laxers face Tigers for showdown

|

This game is big. After completing the first two-thirds of the season successfully, the ninth-ranked Dartmouth women's lacrosse team (10-1 overall, 6-0 Ivy) looks to defend its Ivy League Championship tomorrow against the second-ranked Princeton Tigers (12-1, 5-0). Dartmouth has won or shared the league title four of the last five years and shared the title with Princeton in 1997.

Chuckwagon rides off into the sunset

|

As the NBA season comes to a close, I'm getting excited for the playoffs. Although it's not the same without Michael Jordan and the Bulls entering the field, I can deal with watching Shaq, Kobe, and ex-Bulls coach Phil Jackson leading the Lakers and Vince Carter, the next Jordan, leading the Toronto Raptors. Note: Michael Jordan and the Bulls did not appear in last year's playoffs, but last year's abbreviated season wasn't nearly the same as a regular NBA season, so discard it. Jordan is, however, not the only thing that will be missing from this year's playoffs.

Men's lacrosse falls to Eli, 10-4

Sophomore Brian Hunt, who was just named to the Ivy honor roll after a 12-point performance in two games last week, scored four more to help Yale rout Dartmouth 10-4 for its fourth consecutive win yesterday afternoon in Hanover. The Bulldogs have now won 42 of the 70 match-ups between the two teams, including the last five in a row. From the opening whistle, it was apparent that the Big Green was off its game.

Call me a baseball purist -- call me what you will. I don't necessarily think that the designated hitter is the absolute worst idea in the world.

Women's ruggers have fun in the mud

|

The Dartmouth Women's Rugby Club, fresh off their Ivy Championship last weekend in Rhode Island, followed up with an equally impressive showing at the Spring Ruggers' Classic tournament on Long Island this past weekend. Dartmouth's A-side women went undefeated, bringing home first place in the premier division, while the B-side captured second in the open division. Led by eventual Tournament MVP Kathy Grayson '02, the A-side trampled Drew (36-0), Temple (41-0), and Southern Connecticut (15-0) en route to an exciting championship bout with Radcliffe on Sunday afternoon. Against a backdrop of mud and heat, the Big Green battled it out against a tough Radcliffe squad, gaining momentum early in the game off a kick by Grayson that landed the ball out of bounds and put Dartmouth five meters from the try zone. Outstanding play by the Big Green forwards facilitated the first try of the game, touched down by Monique Roy '00.
