Princeton wins battle of Ivy titans

No. 4 Princeton 9, No. 7 Cornell 5

Sean Hartofilis scored two goals to lead the fourth-ranked Tigers past seventh-ranked Cornell, 9-5 Saturday afternoon. The victory guarantees the Tigers at least a share of the Ivy League title for the sixth consecutive year.

Princeton took the lead early, scoring two goals in the first five minutes. After a goal by Big Red midfielder J.P Schalk, the Tigers went on a tear, scoring the next four goals to give themselves a commanding 6-1 lead at halftime.

Princeton added two more goals in the third quarter before Cornell finally responded early in the fourth. After increasing their lead to 9-2 midway through the final period, the game looked to be wrapped up. The Big Red wouldn't give in however, and mounted a brief run, rattling off three goals before time expired on them.

Brad Dumont had a goal and two assists for Princeton, 8-2 (5-0 Ivy), while Prager and Josh Sims each added one goal with one assist. Goalie Trevor Tierney saved 10 for the Tigers. Princeton, which hasn't lost a conference game in its last 30 tries, could wrap-up the Ivy title with a win Saturday against Dartmouth.

Goalkeeper Justin Cynar stopped 11 for Cornell, which falls to 8-3 (4-1). Five players each scored one goal.

B.J. Prager, Princeton's leading scorer, and starting defenseman Brian Lieberman were both out of the game with injuries. Trevor Tierney stopped 20 goals in the net.

Syracuse, now 10-1, got contributions from several players. Ryan Powell scored a goal and earned six assists, a record at Princeton's Class of 1952 Stadium.

Yale was in control from the beginning, opening up with a 5-1 lead by the end of the first period and taking a 9-2 lead into halftime. After the two teams exchanged goals in the third period, the Bulldogs continued their offensive, scoring four more goals in the final quarter to seal the win.

Harvard, which falls to 6-5 (2-3), has now lost three in a row, including five of its last six, after starting the season with five wins. Five players each had a goal for the Crimson while goalie Keith Cynar made 16 saves.
