Birchall '02 2nd at U.R.I. Invitational

Continuing his torrid play of late, Lee Birchall '02 finished three back at the Rhode Island Invitational, shooting rounds of 73 and 77. Birchall's total of 150 earned him a second-place finish.

Miroslav Holub of Hartford walked away with the win, posting a 147.

In the team competition, the host URI Rams controlled the top spot with a 36-hole total of 609, ten strokes ahead of the next team. The Big Green finished fifth with 625.

Other Dartmouth notables included captain Chris Welty '00 who finished 28th with a score of 158 (76-82) and Andrew Piscano '02 who was one stroke behind Welty, with a 159 (77-82).

Welty tried to put a positive spin on Dartmouth's finish.

"This weekend the team gave it one final run at qualifying for an at large bid for NCAA regionals," Welty said. "Even though we didn't qualify, we gave it a good run and I was proud to play with the team one last time. Lee played great in some tough conditions, and the performances from all four underclassmen show promise for next year."

"I was very happy with my performance." Birchall said. "We were disappointed with our finish though. We were in position to win after the first day which would have given us a shot at an NCAA bid but just couldn't pull it out the second day."

The final match of the season is scheduled for May 6 at Harvard.
