Skiing stays hot at UNH Carnival

|

Not even the freezing cold could stop the Dartmouth ski team's hot streak this season. The Big Green remained undefeated on the season by overwhelming the competition at the University of New Hampshire Winter Carnival, despite frigid temperatures that forced the nordic events to be delayed. The Big Green dominated the meet, winning six out of the eight events and scoring 784 points, amassing an 83-point margin of victory.

Men's basketball splits weekend

|

The Dartmouth men's basketball team split two games of a home stand this weekend. After beating Brown 56-52 on Friday night, the Big Green dropped Saturday night's contest to Yale by a score of 71-64. On Friday night, Dartmouth (7-10, 2-2 Ivy) took its biggest lead over the Bears (6-12, 1-2 Ivy) on a three-point play by Alex Barnett '09, which made the score 46-37 with 10 minutes to play.

The Dartmouth squash teams split the night Wednesday. The women downed Williams College 6-3 while the men dropped five matches to the Ephs. The Dartmouth women (6-3, 0-2 Ivy) overpowered the Ephs (6-5 NESCAC). Heather Lisle '07 made short work of sophomore Stephanie Barnett, dominating the match and winning in three games.

Unusually warm weather has aided the construction of Floren Varsity House, which should be open by November.

Varsity House nears completion

|

Andrew Palmer / The Dartmouth At the tail end of Dartmouth's recent construction boom, the three-story, 41,300 square-foot Floren Varsity House has quietly risen out of the ground over the past year. Though a much smaller-scale project than other recently constructed buildings like the McLaughlin Cluster and Kemeny Hall, Floren is an ambitious replacement to the eighty year-old, 17,200-square-foot Davis Varsity House.

Big Green slips on track, dominates field events

|

While the women's indoor track squad remained undefeated on the season, the men's team hit a bump in the road this past weekend at a tri-meet against Ivy League rivals Yale and Columbia. The men's and women's teams had similar days, as both squads performed well in the field events but struggled on the track.

The Glove

"Playoffs??? Don't talk about playoffs. You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game." This unfortunate rant by Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Mora in 2001 was not the best thing that ever happened to his career, but one of the most memorable press conferences in recent memory.

Youngsters get involved, hockey sweeps weekend series

|

In a week-long tune-up to its final stretch of pivotal conference games, the Dartmouth men's ice hockey team will enter next weekend riding a three-game win streak after beating Canisius by a score of 6-3 on Friday and Sacred Heart in a closely contested 4-3 victory on Saturday at Thompson Arena. Despite playing a rare mid-week game last Tuesday against Holy Cross, the Big Green (9-8-2, 5-5-2 ECACHL) seldom showed signs of fatigue as the team controlled the tempo throughout the majority of each non-conference game. This resolve and focus could be critical in the coming weeks for a Big Green squad that will almost certainly need to win the ECACHL tournament in order to secure a NCAA postseason tournament bid. Dartmouth entered the weekend second in the conference standings, but on Sunday the Big Green had moved down to sixth place, as other teams had played conference games during the weekend. Following the contest against Sacred Heart, head coach Bob Gaudet said that the team will need to focus on executing basic plays if the Big Green want to succeed in the coming week. "We just need to tighten up some of the systems we play--momentum on the power play, killing penalties and just having a good solid team concept both offensively and defensively," Gaudet said. "The stretch drive is coming up," he added.

One on One

Men's hockey consistently draws some of the largest and most enthusiastic Dartmouth sports crowds. I thought I'd talk to goaltender Mike Devine '08 to find out what all the fuss is about, and to figure out what the deal is with all those pads.
