The Glove: Senior Spring 'PE' Madness

After Fall term this year, I realized I needed two physical education credits to graduate. I passed skiing in the winter, and with just one more PE necessary to graduate, I did the most rational thing possible -- I signed up for three: a cabin weekend, tennis and a grant canoeing weekend. All I need to do is make it to one tennis class next week and I pass, so the other two PEs are pretty much meaningless. But the fear of not graduating because of a lack of PE credit was so paralyzing that I needed to make sure I passed by any means necessary.

While many see senior spring as another chance to get outside and enjoy the sunlight, for one group of seniors, Spring term offers opportunities to engage in activities that have heretofore been precluded by the all-encompassing commitment of a varsity sport.

A little over a month ago, I wrote a column urging restraint in hoping the 7-8 Dartmouth men's basketball team would break out and become an Ivy League power. At the time, the Big Green was 1-1 in conference play, and The Dartmouth stated that men's basketball "has its eye on greater things, more importantly an Ivy League Championship and its first NCAA berth since 1959." Since that time, Dartmouth men's basketball has gone 2-8 in the conference (leaving them 9-16 overall), with two of the team's recent losses decided by four points or less and another two ending with just a 10 points margin.

Everything I know about sailing I learned at age nine during my first year of summer camp. Unfortunately, the experience did not lead to a future in competitive sailing, but my lack of expertise did drive me to figure what exactly goes on with our own Dartmouth sailing team. In an attempt to get to the bottom of this elusive sport, I recently sat down with All-American Betsy Bryant '08. With no opinion on the matter, I asked Bryant why sailing was a sport.

This Winter Carnival, I will not participate in any ski races (cross country or alpine), nor will be I partake in the human dogsled.

The Power of Free Booze

The success of frats is, first and foremost, tied to one thing: Free beer. Without the ever-flowing tap of free libations, the popularity of fraternities at Dartmouth would plummet. Without free alcohol, underage students -- unless they know upperclassmen who will buy them alcohol -- will remain legally sober.
