The Dartmouth

Track teams excel in field events

Jessica Long '08 won both discus and the javelin and took second place in the hammer throw, behind teammate Jamila Smith '06. Long also grabbed second in the shot put.

"It was just nice to finally not freeze to death outside all day, and have all my various throwing techniques click," she said. "It can be difficult to stay loose in the cold."Long pointed out the irony of outdoor track in the Northeast: now that the weather is finally warming up, the season is almost at its close. Dartmouth's track team has just one more regular-season meet left.

Long, Smith and Emily Daly '09 formed a potent trio, trading the top spots back and forth in all of the throwing events. In the shot put, Long, Daly and Smith took second through fourth, respectively. Daly took second in the discus and third in the hammer.

In the jumping competitions, the Dartmouth women were equally as dominant. Lilly Bertz '07 won the pole vault, Jadah Chatterton-Richmond '07 won the long jump and Micaela Carwell '08 won the triple jump. Nicole LaBombard '09 took second in the high jump, just barely missing first and a complete sweep of the jumping events by the Big Green women.

"We had a swirling wind which made it difficult for the vaulters in particular," Bertz said.

The team had thought the weather in Boston might actually feel like April, but Hanover's unseasonable cold followed them south.

Kathryn Suchow '08 made sure Dartmouth's presence was felt in the sprints, taking third in the 100 meter dash and fifth in the 200. Audrey Weber '09 and Natalie Stoll '10 took second and third in the 400. Ali Smrcina '10 took third in the 1500, and Caitlin Cunningham '09 grabbed third in her try at the 5000m.

The men's team had success in the field events just as the women did. Ted Lesher '10 won both the long jump and the triple jump. Just behind Lesher in the long jump was Tim Wunderlich '09, setting a new personal record of 6.73 meters. Wunderlich also took third in the 110m hurdles.

Robert Kerris '09 put the Big Green on the board in the throwing events by winning the discus and taking third in the shot put. Alex McClure '08 grabbed second in the javelin.

On the track, the men had several podium finishes as well. Brian Evans '08 was third in the 100m, and Julian Thomas '09 won the 400m. Thomas also anchored Dartmouth's relay squad in the 4 x 400m, which beat the second place finishers from Bryant College by about three seconds. Jeff Englehutt '07 represented Dartmouth in the distance races by winning the 1500m. Pete Pidermann '10 took second place in the 400m hurdles.

"I felt good, but still have some things I've got to fix," Pidermann said.

The Big Green will be hosting the Dartmouth Invitational this coming weekend, the track team's last meet before the Ivy League Championships.
