Deserving of More Nuanced Debate

To the Editor: Brett Thiesen '05's letter to the editor, "Another Example of Liberal Bias in Academia," (June 23) should be considered an embarrassment to its author and to those concerned about intellectual freedom at Dartmouth.

Israel's Ideological Sacrifices

The Israeli Knesset's decision to unilaterally evacuate and dismantle Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip this coming August has been widely viewed by the press and the international community as an inevitable first step towards peace within the framework of the Middle East peace process.

Break Out of the Bubble

A while ago, a friend told me about a conversation she had recently had with a freshman. When she told him that she was planning to live in Norwich for the spring, he asked, "Where's Norwich?" Where's Norwich?

Welcome to Camp Dartmouth

Well, we made it. Somehow, despite the feeling that DOC Trips were a few weekends ago, we're already at our sophomore summer. I'm going to try my best to make sure this column isn't pure cheesy clich, but I promise nothing.

Democratic Party Self Destructs

To the Editor: Once upon a time there were a lot of union guys in the Democrat party. They even set the tone. They knew that elections were not philosophy seminars at Dartmouth, but brawls in which a limited number of slogans were shouted to rally the faithful. If such a politician were asked how he would react if his wife were raped, he'd shout "I'd kill the bastard!" They'd not fret about how "bastards" might feel hearing this word. And they'd not natter on about rape statistics, as the effete Dukakis did. Or cry about insults to his wife as the effete Muskie once did. The Republicans won the last election by finding kernels of the truth as they saw it, shooting out forceful sound bytes, i.e., talking points, and getting every Republican in the universe repeating them until they became conventional wisdom, easily recalled and repeated. Howard Dean understands this technique and began to implement it when he said De Lay was probably going to jail.

As Long As We Remember

It was the third day of Senior Week, at that instant when Dartmouth pushed aside its staidness for the 10-day tented carnival of Commencement and Reunion, when I ran into a freshman preparing to embark on her first three-month break from the Hanover Plain. "Have a great summer," I said, generically enough, directing the oral version of a cliche yearbook message to someone I only tangentially knew at Dartmouth and didn't expect to see again -- regularly, at least -- in my post-grad life. As an aside, I added, "Enjoy your next three years here." "Don't say that," she said.

Selling Out ... Or Being Smart?

With just two weeks to graduation, many seniors are anxiously trying to decide what to do when they leave Dartmouth. This past fall, I watched as a number of my senior friends scrambled madly through their schedules to accommodate trips to New York and Boston for job interviews.

Maybe Taubes was Right

To the Editor: Alice Taubes '08's comments ("Maybe Summers was Right," May 18) deliver one ace for gender equality. Not only are men capable of outstandingly reductive reasoning (Summers), but women are as well. Apparently an omniscient, pre-pubescent Taubes knows all and sees all regarding the Harvard math department.

Right Call on Club Sports

To the Editor: Craig Rubens '06's editorial on club sports ("Club Sports Slowly Being Axed," May 26) highlights a problem that is not unique to the ultimate club. As a member of the then-still-fledgling club hockey team, I can affirm the absolute resistance that the school has to club sports, that we as a team experienced in multiple confrontations with school officials. Like many now-retired club athletes, some of my fondest memories of school are middle-of-the-night road trips back from games in the middle of nowhere, sneaking inside jokes into articles submitted to The Dartmouth, or just post-practice dinners at Food Court with teammates. Life would be great if all club sports could be as well-funded as the rugby team but we all know that is not likely to happen anytime soon. In the meantime, perhaps the College's purchasing a few less flat screen TVs in Berry and spending a little more to help Club sports, in which almost a quarter of all students participate, would be warranted.

China's Turn to Apologize

The situation in the Sudanese region of Darfur has been labeled genocide by both Houses of Congress, President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and former Secretary of State Colin Powell among others.

Who's Alarmist Now?

To the Editor: I, too, was disturbed by the conduct of the recently concluded trustee election -- not by "the tenor of the debate" among the candidates, which was civil and proper, but by some of the outrageous statements hurled at the petition candidates by the Association for a Strong Dartmouth crowd.
