Error About ROTC

To the Editor:

The ROTC has never provided need based scholarships to any student as Congress never authorized same ("ROTC cadets to receive full financial support," Jan. 6). All scholarships are need blind. There are 17 "elite" colleges including Dartmouth, where Cadets have always received a much greater grant than at the other 254 colleges with ROTC programs.

Due to a shortfall of 7,000 cadets (35,000 are authorized and 28,000 are enrolled) the Cadet Command is simply reallocating funds and increasing the grants at the 17 elites to full tuition. This is an effort to stem the loss of Cadets. Next, look for Dartmouth ROTC Cadets to be offered substantial pay, at marketplace rates, for summer training and a reduction and their service obligation after graduation to be cut in half.
