Bang! Math professors prove TV show theory about the number 73

A proof co-authored by Dartmouth mathematics professor emeritus Carl Pomerance and Morningside College mathematics professor Chris Spicer appeared on an episode of the television series, “The Big Bang Theory” on April 18. The proof, which was featured on a whiteboard in the background of the show, reveals the uniqueness of the number 73.

Alumni donations to fund new NAS professorship, arts programs

College President Phil Hanlon announced earlier this month that as part of Dartmouth’s ongoing “The Call to Lead” capital campaign, large gifts from donors will lead to the creation of a new professorship in the Native American studies program and the revitalization of the College’s Arts district.

Earth Day panel discusses Dartmouth’s sustainability efforts

On the evening of April 22, a panel convened in Filene Auditorium to discuss Dartmouth’s sustainability progress. The meeting, held on Earth Day, marked two years since the publication of the “Our Green Future: The Sustainability Road Map for Dartmouth” report­ — the result of a task force created by College President Phil Hanlon to make Dartmouth a “leader” in sustainability.

Corporate recruiting beginning significantly earlier for some firms

Efforts by major companies to recruit Dartmouth students for junior summer internships earlier than in previous years — officially as early as the spring of sophomore year — have been met with pushback from the Center for Professional Development including occasionally barring companies from campus events, according to CPD director Roger Woolsey and senior associate director Monica Wilson.

Dutch elm disease proves a challenge for Dartmouth’s trees

In 1971, Theodor Geisel ’25, in his book “The Lorax,” wrote that the titular creature “speaks for the trees.” But if Dr. Seuss were to give that label today, the recipient would not be the Lorax, but rather, the College’s arborist Brian Beaty, who cares for the roughly 2,000 trees on campus, often monitoring for signs of Dutch elm disease.

Amicus brief in SAE court ruling highlights tensions in Greek life

Last month, the New Hampshire Supreme Court largely ruled in favor of Hanover in the case of New Hampshire Alpha of SAE Trust v. Town of Hanover. As part of that case, in April 2018, three Dartmouth fraternal organizations — Phi Delta Alpha Corporation, Zeta Association of Psi Upsilon and Trustees of Alpha Omega Chapter of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity — filed an amicus brief arguing that the town of Hanover unlawfully delegates governmental authority to the College, an abutter who may have a vested interest in obtaining Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s property.

NH legislature passes death penalty repeal

On April 11, the New Hampshire Senate voted 17-6 to repeal the death penalty. With the House passing an identical version of the bill, House Bill 455, last month in a vote of 279-88, the legislature has the necessary two-thirds majority to override a potential veto from Gov. Chris Sununu (R).

DDS employee raises funds for experimental paralysis treatment

Swiping in and greeting students at ’53 Commons, Dawn Fandino has interacted with most members of the Dartmouth community. Unbeknownst to many people, Fandino has right-side body paralysis from a hemorrhagic stroke she suffered six years ago, which has resulted in life-altering effects for Fandino and her family.
