Terrific trio collects wins at Regionals

After a three-week layoff, a trio of Dartmouth's top men's tennis players returned to action and form during the five-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Men's Regional Championships, otherwise known as the ITA Regionals. Leaving campus Friday morning, the three-man Dartmouth tennis squad -- consisting of David Webb '05, Andres Reyes '05 and Jeff Schechtman '08 -- arrived just in time for Webb and Reyes' 7 p.m.

Misplaying the Race Card

During my time at Dartmouth, I have encountered a disturbing trend among many students -- especially hardcore Democrats -- to resort to name-calling when trying to make some political point.

Heavies finish in 11th place

BOSTON, Oct. 24 -- During one of this city's biggest sports weekends in recent history, the Dartmouth heavyweights and lightweights traveled to the Head of the Charles Regatta with hopes of establishing themselves as forces to be reckoned with in the spring racing season.

Rivalries Are Fun

Anyone who had a childhood knows that rivalries are fun. Whether it's a rivalry with that fat kid down the street that really isn't a rivalry at all because you can easily outrun him and pelt him with rocks, or whether it's a "rivalry" with that girl in first grade who you really want to kiss, rivalries are exciting and healthy. That is why it's really disheartening to see such a ripe opportunity for rivalry (an anti-Dartmouth article by Kwame Spearman in the Columbia student paper) get so bungled by us here at Dartmouth.

Misleading on the Draft

To the Editor: It is certainly understandable that The Dartmouth Editorial Board chose to endorse John Kerry for President ("Verbum Ultimum," The Dartmouth, October 22). What is less understandable is that they chose to continue spreading the absurd idea that a draft is in the offing.

Opinion

Is Dartmouth Racist?

To the Editor: I would simply like to remark that Timothy Mark's letter to the editor ("A Racist School," The Dartmouth, October 26) concerning Dartmouth being a "racist school" is completely ridiculous.

After years, Kresge sees improvements

Kresge Fitness Center is providing its devotees with something to celebrate instead of bemoan: Two new elliptical trainers, one treadmill and a complete set of dumbbells are now gracing the perennially- crowded gym. The new cardio machines, especially, are intended to alleviate the constant crunch in Kresge, where elliptical machines are usually unavailable without a reservation well in advance. Before the recent installations, the gym had six ellipticals, four treadmill and a rundown set of dumbbells. Fitness Center manager Sarah Berger said that even a few new machines can accommodate about 75 people more per day, if they are used continuously in half-hour shifts.

Opinion

Exaggeration, not Bigotry

To the Editor: As a resident of New York City, I know that "Harlem gun battles" don't regularly occur outside of Columbia ("Vox Clamantis in Harlem," The Dartmouth, October 22). However, stating that Harlem is dangerous does not make one racist; it's disappointing that the "racist" card needed to be pulled on an exchange of obviously sarcastic, school-spirit letters.

Opinion

Racism, the Redux

To the Editor: This Marks character ("A Racist School," The Dartmouth, October 26) is absolutely ridiculous to call Dartmouth a racist institution on account of an op-ed article ("Vox Clamantis in Harlem," The Dartmouth, October 22). The offending joke was apparently some reference to Columbia students falling "asleep to the sound of gunshots and sirens." There is no racist tone in this comment or any mention of Harlem's predominantly black population. Once again, political correctness has the panties of excitable nitpickers all in a bunch, causing them to misconstrue insults about their college as racist jokes.

Chem. researcher files suit against College

A Dartmouth researcher has slapped the College with a lawsuit alleging he was demoted after he alerted authorities about a laboratory's dangerous x-ray machine, but College officials have kept mum since filing an answer in court Sept.

Opinion

Dartmouth vs. Columbia

To the Editor: I couldn't agree more with Zachary Pfeiffer's column, "Vox Clamantis in Harlem" (The Dartmouth, October 22). Having experienced both Dartmouth and Columbia (Dartmouth as an undergraduate, and Columbia as a graduate student), I can't help but say that I would choose Dartmouth over Columbia in a flash. Rest easy, students at Dartmouth -- you have a good life in Hanover.

Scherr provides lowdown on College's academic focus

Editor's Note: This is the fourth in a multi-part series on the College's senior administration and the issues facing Dartmouth today and in the future. The provost is in many ways at the helm of the academic experience of a university, even if most students may be unfamiliar with the job's duties.

Women's sailors qualify for Atlantic Coast champs

While most Dartmouth students spent this sunny Saturday in long pants and fleece, the Big Green sailing team raced toward glory in neoprene and dry suits, securing berths in top regattas throughout the East Coast . Despite the extreme drop in mobility and sex appeal, the sailors once again showed their mettle in heavy winds up and down the Northeast. The women's team saga reached one of their major milestones at Connecticut College.
