Debunking Rush Myths - 1

To the Editor: In Michael Kreicher '08's article "Fixing the Rush Process" (Oct. 12), I agree with him on a few points: The fraternity recruitment process does exist "in stark contrast" to its female counterpart, the sorority recruitment process is "grueling," and, yes, there is reasoning behind the more formal sorority process, namely that women need a chance to familiarize themselves with houses they typically have not been given the opportunity to visit before.

N.H. passes voting bill affecting undergrads

The New Hampshire State Senate voted Thursday to pass House Bill 1566, an act that would make it more difficult for out-of-state college students to vote in New Hampshire. The bill stipulates that establishing domicile in New Hampshire for voting purposes is the same as declaring residency in New Hampshire for motor vehicle law purposes.

College hires McKinsey to assess admin. priorities

As part of the most extensive effort yet to evaluate the organization of the College, Dartmouth has hired McKinsey and Co., a management consulting firm, to gather data and assess the effectiveness of the administration. The first phase of the review process began last week when consultants arrived on campus to gather data and conduct interviews with people who have institutional responsibility, according to John Crane, the College's deputy librarian and liaison to McKinsey. College Provost Barry Scherr and Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration Adam Keller spearheaded the assessment last month, and College President James Wright announced the project last week during his administrative forum. "We do need to ensure that the administration is effective in both the ways in which it communicates across the institution, in its use of resources and in the way it delivers services that support the academic and residential mission," Wright said. According to Scherr, the evaluation will examine the areas to which the administration allots importance and will determine whether these should remain institutional priorities.

Dartmouth's Health Services is searching for a coordinator of the alcohol and other drug education program, a position formerly held by Ryan Travia, who resigned in July to join the staff at Harvard University. The Alcohol and Other Drug Education Office serves as an informational resource for the Dartmouth community and initiates programming that encourages low-risk choices relating to substance use, according to the Health Services website. Bryant Ford, director of the substance abuse treatment team at Dick's House and the chair of the search, hopes to fill the coordinator position by Winter term, he said. After interviews, Ford invited the top three candidates back to campus to give presentations.
