Early decision numbers plunge

After a steady three-year increase of early decision applications to the College, the number of candidates has fallen to 1,171, a 9.1 percent decrease from last year's seven-year high of 1,278 applications. Dartmouth's admissions office will still be compiling applications through Thanksgiving, with an additional 20 expected to supplement the current figure. However, the last time the College experienced a decline in the number of early decision applicants occurred during the aftermath of the Sept.

Houses struggle to fill bedrooms

Most Greek houses don't struggle to cram their basements. Several of these organizations, however, are struggling to fill their bedrooms, forcing some houses, like Tabard and Phi Tau coed fraternities, to pull in non-members. Dartmouth residency quotas require that Greek organizations house a minimum number of occupants per term, in order to ease up pressure in overcrowded College housing and generate more revenue in rent for the house themselves. Vacancy in Greek houses doesn't always indicate fading membership.

Ninety students still waiting for housing

Food, clothing and shelter -- life's basic necessities -- cannot be fully guaranteed to some Dartmouth students who are struggling to find roofs over their heads for the upcoming Fall term. A number of members of the Class of 2007 are still waiting to receive a room assignment this summer and have been assigned to the primary or "on-time" waitlist. "At the moment, there are 85 to 90 students on the primary waitlist who for the most part are '07s," Dean of Residential Life Martin Redman said. These students received unfavorable numbers that prevented them from participating in Room Draw, but they applied to be placed on the waitlist by the May 31 deadline. "I believe my number was 4,330, but I didn't think that it was that bad," Jared Cato '07 said.

Native Americans receive admissions focus

In an attempt to solve the growing problem of a steadily declining Native American college population, one summer program recently invited 50 Native American high-school students to receive an in-depth workshop about the college application process. College Horizons, a five-day institute hosted at Carleton College this year, boasted representatives from 21 of the country's most selective colleges, including Dartmouth. The program aimed to teach students how to search for colleges, write an attention-grabbing essay, produce an impressive resume of academic and extracurricular achievements, master an interview and fill out financial aid forms among other activities.
