This past weekend, campus came together to celebrate Green Key weekend, one of the biggest social events at Dartmouth. Since almost all teams’ seasons have officially ended, sports coverage options were slim for us sports editors as we wrapped up Week 8 of the term. While we experienced Green Key, however, we noticed many parallels between this music festival-marathon and high-stakes, athletic competition. We hope you take away from this the lessons we learned from this year’s Green Key, so you may better prepare in the years to come.
On Monday, Dartmouth Athletics officially named Sammy McCorkle as interim head football coach, according to a press release from Haldeman Family athletics and recreation director Mike Harrity. On Sept. 4, Dartmouth field hockey will travel to Orono, Maine, to compete against the University of Maine for its first game of the season. This past March, Harry Miller, a former Ohio State University offensive lineman, retired from football. Last summer, Miller had shared with his coach that he had intentions of committing suicide. After Miller stepped away from the game, recognizing his mental health challenges and seeking help for it, news media outlets applauded him for his courage speaking out.
On Aug. 1, Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson received a six-game suspension after being accused of 24 allegations of sexual misconduct by personal massage therapists from 2019-2021, when he was still a member of the Houston Texans. Following a 15-month investigation into the allegations, federal judge Sue Robinson decided to suspend Watson for six games. The ruling was made on behalf of the NFL’s policy that a third-party counsel should decide the course of action for players who have violated the league’s code of conduct.
This summer, the kickoff of the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf tour sparked controversy with the PGA Tour – its competitor – as well as many who feel displeased with the Saudis’ human rights record. The situation poses questions, such as: what are the Saudis’ goals behind the LIV tour, and how have pro golfers taken sides?
Student-athletes from men’s hockey, track and field, volleyball and women’s lacrosse received various academic recognition awards this past week. While students balance work, life and play differently, many shared that they rely on their coaches and each other to find success.
