It’s awards season here in Los Angeles, and while the Oscars are the hottest ticket in town, the guild awards are much more lax with who they let in. This explains why this past weekend, I was able to secure a press pass for the 2014 Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards. Below is my log of the event and the days leading up to it.

BROWN UNIVERSITY: Provost Mark Schlissel was named the next president of the University of Michigan on Friday, the Brown Daily Herald reported. Since taking office in 2011, Schlissel has led a year-long strategic planning process and currently chairs a search committee for a new dean. He will remain at Brown for the remainder of the academic year and assume his role at Michigan on July 1.

Watching an awards show in its entirety is arguably the most grueling and drawn-out process I have ever gone through, and I am including the time I filled out the FAFSA. There’s a masochistic joy that comes from it, though, and this year’s Grammy Awards were no different. BROWN UNIVERSITY: The body of a Brown junior, Dana Dourdeville, was found on the shore of Falmouth, Mass., ending a two-week search for the missing engineering student, the Brown Daily Herald reported. Dourdeville had been missing since New Year's Eve, when he left home on a duck hunting trip, alone in a kayak.

BROWNUNIVERSITY:The second-largest applicant pool in the university’s history applied for the Class of 2018, the Brown Daily Herald reported. About 30,200 students applied, a 4 percent increase from last year. The Class of 2015 saw the applicant pool’s all-time high of 30,900.

BROWN UNIVERSITY: On New Year’s Eve, Dana Dourdeville ’15 went missing during a solo duck-hunting trip off the coast of Massachusetts. The Coast Guard discovered his kayak three miles offshore a few hours after he left his house. Due to weather conditions, the Coast Guard search was suspended on Thursday. However, approximately 400 friends, family members and volunteers continued the search this Tuesday.

BROWN: Brown University is currently implementing initiatives outlined in President Christina Paxson’s recently approved strategic plan, the Brown Daily Herald reported. A new sophomore seminar program focusing on “diversity and social justice” will be piloted in the spring. Other changes include a post-tenure sabbatical policy and the development of online education programs.

BROWN: Brown’s current $4.3 million deficit has concerned administrators as they plan the operating budget for the next fiscal year, according to the Brown Daily Herald. Though this sum is lower than the $5.5 million deficit that Brown sustained at the end of the last fiscal year, the University had hoped to bring the deficit to zero in the last few years, Provost Mark Schlissel said at an open forum last week. University officials did not indicate whether or not this would result in a tuition increase next year.

The Medieval Enthusiasts at Dartmouth are a group of undergraduates, alumni and community members that share a passion for all things medieval — costumes, archery, fencing and feasting.

BROWN: Brown University has introduced an initiative called “I’m With the Band” granting Brown students free admission to certain performing arts events in downtown Providence, according to the Brown Daily Herald. The initiative, which went into effect Oct. 1., has allowed students to attend film screenings, dance performances, and other local performing arts events free of charge. The program represents an effort by Brown to collaborate with and affirm its connection to the local art community.
