With Major League Baseball holding its opening day this past week, it is only fitting that Dartmouth should kick off its Ivy League season as well this weekend with twin bills at Penn and Columbia. After getting off to a rough start in Saturday's first game against Penn, a 6-1 loss, the Big Green bounced back in impressive fashion to sweep the remainder of their weekend schedule. In the second game against Penn they held on for victory in a tight 4-3 game, and on Sunday the Big Green took both contests against the Lions, 10-7 and 11-7, respectively.
It's often been said that in life, you win some and you lose some. Well, in just one weekend, the women's lacrosse team won one and lost one. On Friday, the Big Green beat the 12th-ranked Penn Quakers on their home turf, 16-6, but later fell in the second frame of battle against the Nittany Lions of Penn State by a score of 12-9. The Sunday loss in State College, PA is the lone blemish on the Big Green's near-perfect 5-1 overall record on the season.

The men's lacrosse team's woes continued last Saturday in Philadelphia with a 15-12 loss to the University of Pennsylvania. The loss dropped the Big Green to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the Ivy League, leaving them tied with Brown and ahead of Yale in the bottom of the Ivy standings. Penn got off to a quick start, but the game was relatively even for the first three quarters.
Now ranked eighth in the nation and hot off their 10-8 upset win over the Princeton Tigers, the women's lacrosse team heads south to play the Penn Quakers and the Penn State Nittany Lions in a Friday-Sunday weekend double-header. The Big Green made their mark last weekend by downing their perennial Ivy foe and vaulting three spots in the national poll.

I've returned. Yes, what follows is yet another installment in my random sports chatter. And without further ado... Spring has arrived and with it comes yet another baseball season.
Freshman pitcher Laura Mills threw a lot of softballs over the plate on Saturday, but not a single one touched the aluminum. That's right, this rookie caught nine batters swinging and gave up one walk as she earned the first no-hitter of her career in Dartmouth's 4-0 victory over Central Connecticut last weekend. Mills was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week for her near-perfect performance.

The "frozen tundra" of Memorial Field seems to have taken its toll on the men's lacrosse team these days, as the spark from their trip down South has suddenly turned cold. Despite moving the game to the snow-free fields of Keene State College in Keene, N.H., the Big Green fell to SUNY Stony Brook 13-10 last Saturday, dropping their record to 1-3 overall. Dartmouth led 2-1 after an otherwise slow first quarter.

Dartmouth's lightweight crews found the light through the dense fog along the Charles River this weekend as all four boats cruised to easy victories over the Tufts heavyweights. Fresh off their victories at the Augusta Invitational over the break, the first varsity won the 2000-meter race in 6:07, edging Tufts by 14 seconds, while the second boat clocked a 6:13 to beat the Jumbos by 17 seconds. "Considering we haven't been on the water all week, I think we rowed quite well this weekend," coxswain Stephanie Yu '97 said.
