Over the Weekend

SOFTBALL: The Big Green dropped a pair of Ivy League games Saturday, falling 2-0 and 18-6 to Cornell at Sachem Field on Saturday.

In the first game, freshman Laura Mills was the hard-luck loser, giving up just four hits and striking out eight. Cornell scored a run in both third and fourth innings to gain the victory.

In Game 2, Cornell scored 14 runs in the second inning, batting around twice and belting nine hits combined with four Dartmouth errors to put the game away early.

On Sunday, the Big Green earned its first Ivy victory of the year as they snapped their 17-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over Penn.

Dartmouth (6-22, 1-9 Ivy) lost, 5-3, in the nightcap.

Trailing 3-1, going into the bottom of the sixth inning in game one, Dartmouth used a double by Jane Peachy '99 to ignite their winning rally.

Ayn Huntington '00 singled and stole second for the Big Green as pinch runner Erin Rath '98 went on to third. Both players scored when the Penn third baseman misplayed a ball hit by Lauren McQuade '97, tying the game.

Freshman pitcher Laura Mills got the win for Dartmouth, scattering five Penn hits.

In the second game, Dartmouth held a 3-1 lead after four innings, but the Quakers scored three runs in top of the fifth on one hit and two Big Green errors.

TRACK: Junior Jenna Rogers set a school record in the 5,000-meter race at the Penn Relays Friday night, clocking 16:17.23 to finish third in the race. She barely broke the old mark of 16:17.38, which Maribel Sanchez '96 established last year.

In men's action, meanwhile, Lane Burks '97 finished fourth in the long jump, covering 23-7.

Dartmouth's Alex Ghanotakis was fifth in the hammer at the Penn Relays Saturday with a throw of 193-11.

In the 4 x 800 relay, the quartet of Jim Tuxbury '97, Michael Fortier '97, Frank Black '00 and Bobby Matthews '97 posted a time of 7:43.9 to qualify for the IC4A Championship, May 22-25, at George Mason University.

RIDING: The Dartmouth riding team won the Ivy League Championship Saturday at the Morton Farm.

Three Big Green riders won their respective classes -- sophomore Cathy Emery in intermediate; sophomore Megan Phillips in the open championship; and senior Christine Sandvik in the open fences competition.

RUGBY: The men's A-side won the New Hampshire State Championship this weekend with a 32-12 victory over UNH.

Also during the day, the Dartmouth B-side decisively defeated the UNH Bs 41-5, and the Dartmouth C-side finished victorious over the UNH Cs by 11.
