Women's lax wins Ivy crown

With a thrilling 15-9 victory over the Harvard Crimson yesterday, the women's lacrosse team finally got what they deserved -- a share of the 1997 Ivy League title.

The title crown will be the Big Green's second in the past three seasons.

While Dartmouth finished its Ivy season with a 5-1 league record, the 4-1 Princeton Tigers will have a shot at a slice of this year's title when they face Cornell on Saturday.

The Big Green dominated the Harvard game right off the opening draw as tri-Captain Kelly Hannigan '97 sank two goals to set the pace for a 7-0 Dartmouth lead in the first 20 minutes.

The Crimson tried to rally but could only find the net twice before Dartmouth pulled ahead for a 10-3 advantage at the half.

The Big Green carried their momentum through the second stanza as they took a 13-6 lead before Harvard pocketed three shots to bring them within four.

But the 11th-ranked Big Green were unstoppable as freshmen Emily Fenwick and Jacque Weitzel fired two more goals to put Dartmouth up for good.

Junior Jen Greene put the icing on the victory cake as she shattered Dartmouth's all-time assist record with 53 career assists. She ended the Harvard game with three dishes.

Sophomore Sarah Carlson had a sensational day in the net as she silenced the Crimson with 12 saves on the afternoon.

Now 9-3 overall, the Big Green have two home games left in their regular season. They face the Vermont Catamounts next Wednesday and the top-ranked Maryland Terps on May 3.
