Over the Weekend

GOLF: The men's golf team took fourth place at the Ivy League Championship as freshman Chris Welty led the Big Green with a 74-79 at the par 71 Black Course at Bethpage State Park.

His combined score of 153 earned him sixth place overall -- good enough for first team All-Ivy honors.

Yale won the team title for the second straight year with a total of 606.

Also scoring for the Big Green were Jay Danzi '98 (82-76 -- 158), MacKenzie Hurd '98 (84-75 -- 159), Steve Sugarman '97 (79-80 -- 159), and Jay Lavender '97 (92-74 -- 166).

RUGBY: The Dartmouth Rugby Club beat Rice University 58-14 in the first round of the East regional at State College, Pennsylvania. The victory in the national round of 16 puts Dartmouth in the final 8 of the country.

Dartmouth jumped on Rice right from the opening whistle. Freshman flanker Alex Magleby '00 took the throw at the first lineout. Prop Dan Thibeault '97 ran off the subsequent ruck and broke through three tackles for a score.

Dartmouth won another lineout and set up a series of rucks. Scrumhalf Doug Burnaford '98 ran weak and snuck through for the try. Mike Morn's '97 conversion made it 12-0.

And once the Big Green set the pace, there was no turning back.

Fullback Morn scored the final try of the half after entering the line from a Dartmouth scrum. The score at the interval was 38-7.

Captain Torbjorn Dimblad '97 finished off the scoring with two tries in the final 15 minutes. The final score was 58-14.

SAILING: The women's sailing team qualified for Nationals this weekend with a second place finish in the New England Qualifiers on Sunday. While Brown led the pack with 83 points, Dartmouth outscored Connecticut College in a tiebreaker with 116 points.

In the A Division, Heather Melanson '97 and Casey Hogan '99 competed for the Big Green while Erin Meyers '00 and Leigh Lucas '98 raced in the B Division.

Carrie Gilbert '97 will serve as the team's alternate at the Nationals in Portland, Oregon later this month.

Melanson was also voted number two women's crew in the New England Region. Casey was voted number nine women's skipper in New England.

The Big Green also took top honors at the New England Sloop Invitational this weekend as Catherine Ware '00, Jeff Blecher '98 and Alex Neuhoff '00 beat out three other boats.

TRACK: A pair of seniors, Dan Niederjohn and Lane Burks, won their events to help the Big Green win second place in a quad-meet at Northeastern on Saturday.

Niederjohn cleared 14-0 to win the pole vault while Burks leaped 13-4 3/4 to win the long jump.
