Two-sport athlete leaves Hanover, eyes Olympics

|

Dartmouth's all-important winter season is in full swing, but cross-country runner and Nordic skiing all-star Ben True '08 is noticeably missing from the Big Green scene. True has decided to spend the Fall and Winter term intensifying his Nordic training schedule at the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation in Sun Valley, Idaho. This is the first time that True, who is currently training with Dartmouth ski team alumnus Mike Sinnott '07, has dedicated himself solely to his skiing. True believes that he will be able to achieve significantly more in skiing without the academic pressures of Dartmouth.

The Glove

Welcome back for Winter term, sports fans. Winter in Hanover is a time to take in a hockey game at Thompson Arena, a basketball game at Leede Arena or maybe just take a day off from class and go skiing. Whichever way you'll have it, sports are a great cure for the winter blues. Right now, it is a good time to be a fan of Dartmouth men's hockey -- not necessarily in terms of its current iteration (5-7-1, 2-6-1 ECAC), but those of us who have been around the team for a few years are happy to notice that some former Dartmouth players are finally taking the next step in proving that they can make it in the pros. As recently as the beginning of the 2007-2008 season, there was only one Dartmouth hockey alumnus playing for the National Hockey League, the highest level of professional hockey. Lee Stempniak '05 was a fifth-round draft choice by the St.

Swimmers train in Ireland, compete in Vegas over break

|

The Dartmouth men's and women's swim teams spent their winter break training, globe-trotting and competing as they traveled to Las Vegas, Nev., and across the pond to Dublin, Ireland. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Invitational gave the Big Green a chance to test themselves against a group of athletes that are seldom available for competition on the East Coast. "It was good to compete against West Coast teams," women's co-captain Liz Mancuso '08 said.

The Dartmouth men's basketball team had a tough time winning over break but has yet to face the bulk of its conference schedule.

Women's basketball faces tough foes, preps for league play

|

Tilman Dette / The Dartmouth Senior Staff The Dartmouth women's basketball team found wins hard to come by over the holiday season, but the team's play improved during late December as the Big Green women look to translate the experiences from the non-conference slate into Ivy League success. The team played tough against several NCAA tournament-caliber teams, a feat made even more impressive when considering that the team had a full month between home contests. Co-captain Kristen Kraft '08 sees the non-conference winter break schedule as a way to prepare for Ivy League play by facing tough non-conference opponents. "I believe we grew as a team over break," Kraft said.

Freshman rowers head south, varsity serves self-sanction

|

While over 50 freshmen rowers from the men's and women's heavyweight and lightweight teams trained for over a week in Miami this winter break, the varsity teams were kept in Hanover for training after a self-imposed sanction. The reason behind the upperclassmen's exclusion from the trip to Miami was not entirely clear to the freshmen.
