Men's squash blanked by Princeton, Penn at Nationals

The Dartmouth men's squash

team (13-5, 2-4 Ivy) had a disappointing

weekend at the CSA

Championships in Cambridge,

Mass., losing to Ivy rivals Penn

and Princeton, both by scores of

9-0.

The Big Green entered the

CSA Championships at the No.

7 position in the Potter Division,

which is made up of the top eight

teams in the nation.

Dar tmouth star ted of f the

weekend on Friday, playing No.

2 Princeton in the quarter-final

round of the tournament. The

team was swept by the Tigers,

not taking a single game.

While the men were expected

to lose to Princeton, the defeat

by Penn was more discouraging,

especially after last weekend's

tough loss to the Quakers.

The Dartmouth players have

recently been frustrated by injuries

to captain Ted Newhouse

'09 and Tyler Young '09, playing

the No. 2 and No. 8 spots on the

team ladder. Due to knee pain,

Young was forced to sit out of the

Princeton match.

Newhouse took the results of

the game as an indication of the

team's lingering afflictions.

"It's definitely been a rough

week for us, injur y-wise," Newhouse

said. "I think [the game]

showed that our team was still

hurting today."

These injuries were particularly

significant in the Penn match,

as Newhouse and Young were the

only two winners in the previous

match against the Quakers.

Though the final result was unsatisfying,

Newhouse reported the

most frustration in not being able to

face Penn with a healthy team.

"It's definitely disappointing,"

Newhouse said. "Penn's still a

good team; it's just too bad that

we couldn't bring our best to the

match."

A highlight came in the No. 1

match, when Andrew Boumford

'09 took two games from Penn's

Lee Rosen, who is ranked No. 12

nationally. After a rocky star t,

Boumford rallied in his third

and fourth games, winning with

scores of 9-3 and 9-7. Boumford

surrendered his final game 9-5.

At No. 2, Newhouse also played

a close match, winning his second

and fourth games with scores of

10-8 and 9-5 before losing the

match in five games.

Mike Lewis '11 played competitively

at No. 4, prevailing in his

third game 9-4 and losing the final

game by a close score of 10-8.

Steve Preefer '11 also lost 3-1 in

the No. 7 spot, winning his second

game 9-4 before dropping the final

two with scores of 9-3 and 9-7.

The Big Green squad battled

No. 8 Williams for the No. 7 spot

Sunday after press time. With a

win over the Ephs, Dartmouth will

improve its No. 8 finish in 2007.

Newhouse remains confident

in the team's attitude going into

their final playoff game.

"Ever yone's definitely fired

up for this one," Newhouse said.

"They're our biggest rival, so I

think everyone's really excited

to play them. Hopefully we can

bring it all together and win."
