On April 29, 1984, The Dartmouth Review secretly recorded and published details of a Gay Student Association meeting on campus. In the fallout of the event, campus-wide conversations arose on privacy and how to support LGBTQ+ students. Decades later, the legacy of the incident persists, as do concerns regarding privacy in queer spaces on campus.

Shontay Delalue named senior vice president and senior diversity officer

On Feb. 4, the College announced that Shontay Delalue will serve as the College’s senior vice president and senior diversity officer, the administration’s point person on equity and inclusion. Delalue, who currently serves as the vice president for institutional equity and diversity at Brown University, will assume her role on July 1.

“Visibility,” Dartmouth’s month-long campaign to promote gender equity and end gender- and power-based violence, started on Jan. 29 and will feature remote programming throughout February. This year’s events will focus on the intersections between gender- and power-based violence and race.

FUERZA Fund and Sunrise Dartmouth raise money for Upper Valley migrant farmworkers

Environmental advocacy group Sunrise Dartmouth and the FUERZA Farmworkers’ Fund have collaborated to raise over $1,600 for migrant farmworkers in the Upper Valley. The week-and-a-half-long fundraising push consisted of events that spotlighted local farmworkers and aimed to educate Dartmouth students on migrant labor in New Hampshire and Vermont.

Hop to undergo $75 million expansion

Dartmouth has commissioned architecture company Snøhetta to lead an expansion of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Dubbed “the Hop project,” the initiative aims to raise approximately $75 million for its construction and related programming, $25 million of which has already been amassed.

Q&A: Organizer Demi Stratmon ’20 on D.C. statehood

Students disappointed, ‘not surprised’ by restricted Commencement plans

Reactions have been mixed in the wake of the College’s decision to hold an in-person Commencement for the Class of 2021, restricted only to graduating students. Members of the Class of 2020, who will now have to wait at least through this year to celebrate together after their in-person ceremony was postponed indefinitely, said they had expected the announcement.

Male college students more likely to speak in class, Dartmouth sociology study finds

In a recent study, Jennifer Jiwon Lee ’17 and sociology professor Janice McCabe set out to see if nearly four decades later, college classrooms remain just as “chilly.”

Upper Valley Eateries and Retail cooperative to offer local delivery service

To help brave the colder months, local businesses Boloco, Lou’s and Murphy’s on the Green have banded together to form the Upper Valley Eateries and Retail cooperative, which will offer delivery services through a mobile “UVER” app.

Trump NSA general counsel appointee Michael Ellis ’06 placed on leave

On the eve of President Joe Biden’s inauguration, former President Donald Trump appointed Michael Ellis ’06 to serve as the top lawyer for the National Security Administration — a typically apolitical role. Trump’s midnight bid to appoint Ellis, who has led a controversial career as White House senior director for intelligence and senior associate counsel to Trump, drew immediate criticism from government officials and experts, and the Biden administration has since placed Ellis on leave pending an investigation into his selection for the role.
