While this may seem like the stuff of fiction, a similar training scenario for student soldiers occurred not too long ago on our familiar campus. Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program is a college-based officer commissioning program used predominantly in the United States.

Valentine's Day is about loving the one you're with, whether it be that gentleman caller down the hall (floor-cest!) or the tripee who you eat lunch with every week (tripcest!). Either way, treat yourself to an easy riff on strawberry shortcake. Presentation is flexible: you can create heart shapes out of the berries, cut out hearts in the pound cake -- just go crazy! back. Berry Love Cake Ingredients ** 1 loaf pound cake ** 2 pints fresh strawberries ** 1 can whipped cream ** White or brown sugar, to taste ** 8 ounces quality bittersweet or white chocolate, chopped (optional) Directions Rinse, trim and halve the strawberries.

A Dartmouth Valentine's Day poem

The key to understanding Valentine's Day, as everyone knows, is the Hallmark card. And I think here's where our problem begins; Dartmouth and Hallmark are living in completely different worlds -- just try to find the "I'm sorry I peed on you" card or the "To my booty call, on this Valentine's Day" card in CVS. Okay, so Dartmouth doesn't quite match the picture that Hallmark has crafted for us.

In defense of emo

In honor of Valentine's Day, it would only be appropriate to talk about a musical style that Valentine's Day brings out the best in, and that, of course, is emo. Sure, Valentine's Day is about flowers, chocolate hearts, the corporate exploitation of an overly sentimental holiday with an overriding focus on consumerism and maybe even love, but there's also the counter-cultural approach to Valentine's Day -- celebrated with the donning of black attire and the blasting of bitter songs about cheating ex-girlfriends and loveless, empty futures. However, I'm not going to address emo music and its surrounding culture per se, although I won't go out of my way to avoid ridiculing it; rather, I want to discuss everyone's over-eagerness to classify music as emo. Emo originated as a musical style that branched off of hardcore, a subgenre of punk that many find unbearable, or at least incomprehensible.
