Women's lax soars past Eagles, 17-3

Six minutes into the rain-soaked women's lacrosse game at Chase Field, Boston College looked poised, up 2-0, to upset the twelfth-ranked Big Green. Dartmouth had other ideas, though, as they reeled off 15 unanswered goals, eventually knocking off the Golden Eagles by a score of 17-3. Today was the official home-opener for the Big Green after their date with Yale on Saturday needed to be moved to Springfield College as a result of the weekend's inclement weather. The Big Green (2-1, 1-0 Ivy) were led by tri-captain Jen Greene '98 who scored twice and assisted on six other Dartmouth tallies.

Freshman of the Term

Dartmouth women's hockey netminder Meaghan Cahill '01 may be a wee freshman, but she has made a large dent in the Dartmouth College athletic record books. Cahill has played every minute of every game, compiling a .908 save percentage and a 2.59 goals against average. She has also recorded four shutouts this season and set a single-season mark for most wins -- 19. Her 715 saves on the season leaves her just 16 shy of the single-season record in that department, a record currently held by Kelley Coyne '90. The future is a bright one for the Big Green as Cahill is one of the septet of rookies which has come to be known as "The Magnificent Seven"

Men's icers have season come down to two games

After 27 games and almost five months of hockey, the Dartmouth men's hockey team's season comes down to the final two regular season games this weekend, tonight against Brown and tomorrow night against Harvard at Thompson Arena. The Big Green (11-11-5 overall, 7-10-3 ECAC, 8th place) are right on the cusp of making the playoffs for just the third time in the 1990s, and they have their destiny in their own hands.

Providence will be first step toward ECAC championship

This is what it's all about. For the past seven years when it began, the ECAC tournament has been the climax of the season for women's hockey players. This year it's even bigger. Not only does it scream out, "We are the champions," but this year, the ECAC tournament is a stepping stone to the brand new, four-team National Championship. UNH, the winner of the ECAC this season, already holds the first ticket into the Championship.

With the men's ice hockey team on the cusp of making the playoffs and the women's ice hockey team already in the ECAC quarterfinals, the College's Athletic Department is pulling out all the stops to encourage Dartmouth students to come out and support their teams this weekend. All students can gain free admission to Friday's and Saturday's men's games and Saturday afternoon's women's playoff game simply by showing their Dartmouth ID upon entry into Thompson Arena before any of the games. The men's team takes on Brown tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

Women's basketball must sweep to keep Ivy hopes alive

The time is now. If the women's basketball team wants any share of the Ivy title now held solely by Harvard, the Big Green must win their next three games and hope that the Crimson fall apart down the homestretch. Now three games back behind Harvard (10-1 Ivy), Dartmouth (7-4 Ivy) shares the second place position with the Princeton Tigers (7-4 Ivy). So the Big Green will be shooting for all or nothing this weekend as they head down to Providence and New Haven to take on the Brown Bears and the Yale Bulldogs for the second time this season.
