Baseball hits the road
The Big Green baseball team will try to even their Ivy League record this weekend during a four-game stint at Brown. Entering the weekend, Dartmouth is 2-6 in league play but has an excellent chance of moving from last place in the Red Rolfe division to second place. Although Brown is 4-4 in league play, the Bears are only 7-23 on the year overall. A sweep by Dartmouth would propel the Big Green ahead of the Bears and possibly ahead of Yale, their opponent the following weekend in Hanover. Yale faces division-leader Harvard in a four-game series this weekend.
Brown dropped a pair of games to Vermont, who beat the Big Green, 9-5 , earlier this week. While Brown did sweep Penn at home, it split a pair of games with Columbia, whom Dartmouth swept at home last Friday. The Bears are led by freshmen outfielder Darren Merten, who is batting .333 on the season and by Pete DeYoung, who was named Ivy League player of the week two weeks ago.
Men's Lacrosse looks for win
After dropping a closely-fought game to Yale on Wednesday, the Big Green travel to Brown this weekend in search of their first Ivy League victory of the season. Brown may be the best place left for the Big Green to win as they sit in fourth place in the league, only 2-7 on the year. However, Dartmouth has lost to both the fifth and sixth place teams already at home this season.
Brown fought with second place Harvard for most of their contest last week, falling 13-8. Despite the loss, freshmen attacker Mike Monfett was honored as rookie of the week for the second time this season as a result of his five points But the true scorer to watch for on the Bears is senior Mike Satin, who is sixth overall in the league in scoring.
Princeton returned to the top spot in the nation last week after Maryland was dealt their first loss of the season. The Tigers took sole possession of first place when they defeated Harvard, 15-7, last weekend. The bad news for the Big Green is that Brown gave Princeton their toughest victory of the year, a 9-6 win in Providence. The Big Green will see top-ranked Princeton next weekend when they travel to Hanover.
Softball faces Princeton
The women's softball team travels to Princeton on Sunday to face off against the Tigers in a doubleheader in a set of games that could potentially give the Big Green a hold of third place in the Ivy League. Dartmouth enters the contest 1-3 in league play, only one game back of the third-place Tigers. A sweep of Princeton would put the Big Green in back of league-leaders Harvard and Cornell, though Dartmouth has little chance of catching those two powerhouses.
A daunting task facing the Big Green is Tiger hurler Alyssa Smith, who threw her second one-hitter of the year last weekend against Penn in a complete game shutout. She has allowed only three runs in her three Ivy League starts.
While the Big Green and Tigers do battle for third-place, the question remains whether anybody will be able to catch Cornell. The Big Red have now won a school-record 20 straight games and are 21-3 on the season.
