Baseball ends losing skid

The Big Green had a record-setting day against the Penmen of New Hampshire College enroute to a 12-3 victory at Red Rolfe Field yesterday. The win snapped Dartmouth's six-game losing streak.

Sophomore first baseman Aaron Meyer's ninth home run of the season tied him for the school record while simultaneously helping the Big Green tie a team record for home runs in a season with 25 round-trippers. However, Meyer's eighth inning blast had little effect on the outcome as Dartmouth had posted 11 runs prior to the solo shot.

Leading 2-1 after four innings, the Big Green watched as the Penmen struggled on the mound, issuing nine free passes while bouncing six pitches to the backstop. Dartmouth took advantage of those errors by posting three runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning to blow open what had been a pitching duel.

Meyer, Ron Friedman '99 and center-fielder James Little '00 each had two runs batted in on the afternoon.

Despite going one-for-four on the afternoon, junior co-Captain Mike Conway's single broke the school record, set just last year, for hits in a season with 64. Conway also stole his team-leading 13th base, one of seven swipes of the afternoon for Dartmouth.

While the Big Green hitters lit up the scoreboard, the Big Green pitchers kept New Hampshire College off of the scoreboard. Starting pitcher Jeff Dutremble '01 had another strong outing, pitching seven innings of three-run ball while striking out seven batters. The Dartmouth bullpen combined for two perfect innings to close out the game for the Big Green, who saw their record improve to 20-15. It was the second straight 20-win season for the squad, an accomplishment last achieved in 1987-88.

The Big Green face Holy Cross at home today at 3 p.m.

Softball drops pair to UVM

Fresh off of its first Ivy League sweep in team history, the Dartmouth softball team was dealt two losses by the University of Vermont in Burlington yesterday. The Catamounts won both games by eight runs, taking the first contest, 12-4, before shutting out the Big Green, 8-0, in the nightcap.
