"Playoffs??? Don't talk about playoffs. You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game." This unfortunate rant by Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Mora in 2001 was not the best thing that ever happened to his career, but one of the most memorable press conferences in recent memory.

Youngsters get involved, hockey sweeps weekend series

|

In a week-long tune-up to its final stretch of pivotal conference games, the Dartmouth men's ice hockey team will enter next weekend riding a three-game win streak after beating Canisius by a score of 6-3 on Friday and Sacred Heart in a closely contested 4-3 victory on Saturday at Thompson Arena. Despite playing a rare mid-week game last Tuesday against Holy Cross, the Big Green (9-8-2, 5-5-2 ECACHL) seldom showed signs of fatigue as the team controlled the tempo throughout the majority of each non-conference game. This resolve and focus could be critical in the coming weeks for a Big Green squad that will almost certainly need to win the ECACHL tournament in order to secure a NCAA postseason tournament bid. Dartmouth entered the weekend second in the conference standings, but on Sunday the Big Green had moved down to sixth place, as other teams had played conference games during the weekend. Following the contest against Sacred Heart, head coach Bob Gaudet said that the team will need to focus on executing basic plays if the Big Green want to succeed in the coming week. "We just need to tighten up some of the systems we play--momentum on the power play, killing penalties and just having a good solid team concept both offensively and defensively," Gaudet said. "The stretch drive is coming up," he added.

Men's hockey consistently draws some of the largest and most enthusiastic Dartmouth sports crowds. I thought I'd talk to goaltender Mike Devine '08 to find out what all the fuss is about, and to figure out what the deal is with all those pads.

Tilman Dette / The Dartmouth After tough losses against Yale and Trinity this past weekend, the Dartmouth men's and women's squash teams got back on the winning track as both squads steamrolled Amherst Wednesday night at the Berry Sports Complex. The Big Green women proved to be too much to handle and swept the Lord Jeffs 9-0.

Hoops comeback falls short

|

Alicia Modeen / The Dartmouth Staff The Big Green mounted a gritty second-half comeback against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, but ultimately fell short, losing 65-61 at Leede Arena Monday night. The cross-state rivals held the Big Green (6-9, 1-1 Ivy) scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half, and took their largest lead of the night, 49-28, with 17 minutes still to play. In an effort to slow the game down and protect their commanding lead, UNH (6-12, 2-3 America East) switched from man-to-man to zone defense. Dartmouth was ready for the change.

Men's hockey ices Crusaders in long-awaited grudge match

|

Sometimes revenge is a dish best served cold, and the Dartmouth men's hockey team did just that on its home ice Tuesday evening, as the Big Green routed the College of the Holy Cross 4-0 at Thompson Arena behind a one-goal, two-assist performance from Kevin Swallow '09. The Big Green (7-8-2, 5-5-2 ECACHL) certainly had last season's contest with the Crusaders (8-12-4.

Figure skating squad dances its way to collegiate dominance

|

With three national titles under their belts and four undefeated seasons, Dartmouth's figure skating team is busy training for what promises to be another successful season and preparing to host the National Championships in April. Dartmouth's figure skating team has qualified for every National Collegiate Figure Skating Championship since 2000, and this past April, the Big Green won a third consecutive national title, continuing the Dartmouth skaters' undefeated streak that began in the fall of 2003.
