Women's basketball wins to keep pace with Ivy leaders

|

After staging two brilliant come-from-behind wins a week ago, the Big Green returned to the court this weekend for two strong home wins over Brown, 61-49, and Yale, 73-63, concluding a five-game home stand. On Friday, Dartmouth (8-12, 5-1 Ivy) cruised to an easy victory against Brown (1-19, 0-6 Ivy), led by Koren Schram '09 on both ends of the floor.

Kyle Betts / The Dartmouth Skiing The Big Green ski team broke its undefeated streak that stretched back to the beginning of last season at the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association carnival at the University of Vermont last weekend. Dartmouth finished third with 604 points behind Middlebury's 628 and UVM's 624 points. Ida Sargent '11 continued her strong freshman season with a win in the 10K classic race and the freestyle race. Dartmouth took the top three spots in the women's freestyle race with Elsa Sargent '08 taking second and Rosie Brennan '11 taking third. In addition, Dakota Blackhorse von-Jess '08 won the men's freestyle race followed by a secondplace finish from Patrick O'Brien '10. In the women's slalom race, Hayley Jones '10 was Dartmouth's top finisher coming in seventh place. Francis Fortin-Houle '10 was Dartmouth's first finisher in the men's slalom event, finishing 10th. The EISA carnival circuit resumes this weekend with Dartmouth's Winter Carnival at the Dartmouth Skiway. Men's Hockey Dartmouth men's hockey (8-11-2, 3-10-1 ECAC) dropped to last place in the ECAC this week following losses to Yale (6-4-4, 10-7-4 ECAC), which is ranked sixth nationally, and Brown (3-14-4, 3-8-4 ECAC). Brown has won only three of its last 18 games, two of which were over Dartmouth. The Big Green will face off against ninth-ranked Resselaer (9-17-3, 4-9-2 EC AC) on Friday and fifth-ranked Union (12-9-4, 7-4-3) on Saturday. In conference standings, Union leads Dartmouth by 10 points.

Last Saturday, feeling thoroughly exhausted and lazy, I decided to stay in and watch Will Smith's "The Pursuit of Happyness"(2006). When I went to bed, I had hoped to wake up early and pursue my own form of happiness, proper spelling and all. With a purposefully light schedule this term, I had planned to go skiing multiple times each week, only Mother Nature hasn't been willing to cooperate.

Women's hockey eyes second place after weekend win, tie

ADRIAN MUNTEANU / The Dartmouth The Big Green women's hockey team posted a solid showing during their second-to-last home stand of the season, tying Yale 3-3 on Friday and defeating Brown 4-2 on Saturday. Yale (9-9-5, 6-7-3 ECAC) arrived in Hanover hoping to defend second place in the Ivy League, which it had wrested from the Big Green (12-7-4, 9-5-2 ECAC) last week following Dartmouth's loss to Harvard (19-1-0, 16-0-0 ECAC). When the two teams played earlier in the season, Dartmouth emerged with a 4-1 victory. The Bulldogs got the first major opportunity early in the first period with a 5-on-3 power play advantage but failed to get any of six shots past the Dartmouth defense and goalkeeper Carli Clemis '09.

The Big Green put itself in a three-way tie for first place in the Ivy League with two wins, over Princeton and Penn, last weekend.

Women's basketball rallies to win two Ivy League games

|

SEBASTIAN RAMIREZ-BRUNNER / The Dartmouth Coming from behind both times, Dartmouth women's basketball put together consecutive victories this past weekend with a 68-55 win against Princeton and a 63-58 win against Penn. With the weekend sweep, the Big Green (6-12, 3-1 Ivy) leads the Ancient Eight along with Cornell (11-6, 3-1 Ivy), Harvard (10-8, 3-1 Ivy) and Yale (5-12, 3-1 Ivy). In all three of its Ancient Eight wins this season, Dartmouth had to battle back from second-half deficits and build key scoring runs to win. Head coach Chris Wielgus pointed out that the team does a superb job of stifling opposing teams to throw up long jumpers when the shot clock is winding down. "We pride ourselves in our defense," Wielgus said.

Toe to Toe: Super Bowl Edition (Schmidley)

In my column two weeks ago, I espoused the Pats as the "correct" team for the neutral fan to cheer on to victory. In the weeks since, I vacillated back and forth between staunch belief in my pro-Pats position and fundamentally questioning its validity.

The Giants will walk into University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday as heavy underdogs, but don't think they can't pull off an upset. In fact, don't be surprised if they do. The Giants took the Patriots to the brink of defeat when the two teams met on December 29th.

Super Bowl weekend -- the greatest spectacle in sports -- is finally upon us. The Super Bowl is an event that encapsulates the American dream -- passion, hope, hard work, cheerleaders, pigs in a blanket, etc. In fact, perhaps the only competitive contest that could eclipse the Bowl would be a Royal Rumble-style cage match between all the presidential candidates juiced up on HGH.
