Game one came down to the final inning but ended with a 5-4 Dartmouth loss, followed by a 8-2 defeat in the second game.
Dartmouth (4-15, 0-2 Ivy) has had a bumpy start to the season, dropping five consecutive games.
In the opener, Princeton (5-17, 2-0 Ivy) struck first with two runs, but the Big Green quickly responded. The Big Green lineup, led by Ashley Gleason '09 who hit a home run, took a two-run lead in the fifth inning. The Tigers responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with another offensive barrage and took a 5-4 lead that defended in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Dartmouth had eight hits but could not take advantage of scoring opportunities. The Big Green left seven runners on base.
Gleason was pleased that the lineup got good offensive production against a strong Princeton team.
"We played a very good first game against Princeton," Gleason said. "We have been working to improve our hitting and got lots of hits."
Angela Megaw '08 started the game for the Big Green and pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs and recording one strikeout. She was injured in the bottom of the sixth inning and had to leave the field.
Devin Lindsay '11 stepped in to relieve Megaw in the first game. Lindsay also pitched all six innings of the second game, giving up seven earned runs and striking out four on the day.
"Angela did a great job pitching until she was hit by a line drive in the sixth inning," Gleason said. "Princeton had a lucky swing after that which really hurt us."
Princeton opened up the scoring again in the second game. The Tigers took a 4-0 lead, but Dartmouth posted two runs in the top of the fourth. The game would not stay close for long, though, as Princeton hammered in four in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 8-2. The Big Green tallied seven hits and left nine runners on base.
"In the second game, we got behind early and just had a difficult time coming back," Gleason said. "Again, the hitting was good but we were not getting the timely hits we needed."
Dartmouth received offensive production from Christy Autin '10, Kirsten Costello '10 and Nikki Yee '10. Autin went 4-for-8 in the two games, while Costello went 3-for-6 and Yee posted a double and a triple.
Sunday's doubleheader at Cornell was postponed due to unplayable conditions and will be made up later in the season.
The Big Green has now weathered one of the toughest parts of the season as it enters a three-game home stand. Each of the 19 games the team has played this season have been on the road.
The team lost a few core players to graduation last year, but this season's young team has certainly showed potential despite having only six upperclassmen.
Dartmouth hopes to turn the season around as it enters the Ivy League season. In 2007, the Big Green went 11-9 to claim second place in the League's North Division.
"We plan to bring our best to every game this week and hope to come out with a win," Gleason said.
This week the team will play home games against Providence on Tuesday and Penn on Saturday.
