Dartmouth Athletes Take Beijing

As the 2008 Summer Olympics approach and athletes around the world prepare for the competition on the world's biggest stage, several members of the Dartmouth community are also readying themselves for a shot at the gold. While some ex-Dartmouth athletes will be representing the United States for the second time, others will be competing in their first Olympic Games, and a few non-U.S.

Toe to Toe: Hodes Vs. Schmidley (Schmidley)

Today's column marks the end of our "Toe to Toe" tenure. I am a bit too lazy to count how many rounds my colleague and I have had in the ring during our year-long term, but one number I am quite certain I am in the ballpark of figuring out is the figure I like to call "less than or equal to five," which represents the number of wins Hodes collected since we started last Spring term.

Toe to Toe: Hodes Vs. Schmidley (Hodes)

For over a year, Schmidley and I have debated some of the most pressing matters in sports. Now, with our careers coming to an end and with all of campus in need of closure, we are embarking upon one final debate to crown the unofficial victor.

Track and field teams compete in ECAC/IC4A meets championship meets

Jennifer Argote / The Dartmouth Senior Staff The athletes on Dartmouth's men's and women's track and field teams had a different Green Key experience this weekend, as the teams competed in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America championship meets in Princeton, N.J. The men finished in eighth place out of 49 teams, while the women's squad came in 33rd place out of 47 teams after Saturday's competition. The ECAC/IC4A championships are scored meets, and only the top eight finishers in each event score points toward their respective school's team score.

The Glove: Senior Spring 'PE' Madness

After Fall term this year, I realized I needed two physical education credits to graduate. I passed skiing in the winter, and with just one more PE necessary to graduate, I did the most rational thing possible -- I signed up for three: a cabin weekend, tennis and a grant canoeing weekend. All I need to do is make it to one tennis class next week and I pass, so the other two PEs are pretty much meaningless. But the fear of not graduating because of a lack of PE credit was so paralyzing that I needed to make sure I passed by any means necessary.

Baseball field renovations begin

Jennie Post / The Dartmouth Staff With the end of Dartmouth's 2008 baseball season, the College will soon commence a major renovation of Red Rolfe Field, the Big Green's home baseball field, which the Athletic Department hopes will fully modernize Dartmouth's ageing baseball facilities. The renovation, which has been in the works for several years, will convert the field from dirt and grass to a FieldTurf synthetic surface.

Student Athlete Advisory Committee elects new members

Dartmouth's student athletes elected seven new members to the 10-member executive board of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee last week. The SAAC was created "to provide student athletes with a voice in the Dartmouth College Athletic Department, as well as foster communication regarding issues that impact the student athlete experience," according to Dartmouth's Athletic Department web site. In order to run for a position on the executive board, a student athlete must nominate oneself or be nominated by a teammate. The candidates then present statements to a general assembly meeting of Dartmouth's student athletes, who vote to elect the new members. The new members of the SAAC executive board are Sean Milich '09, Pavel Sotskov '09, Christina Clark '10, Lucretia Witte '10, Catherine Armstrong '10, David Fink '11 and William Greif '11. Three members of this year's executive board -- Caitlin MacDonald '09, Ted Newhouse '09 and Jeffrey Friedman '10 -- were elected to serve again next year. This year, 15 athletes were nominated for the 10 executive board spots, including three returning board members. In past years, executive board members have appointed a president, vice president and treasurer from within the group after the members had been elected. Last year, however, the board decided not to appoint these positions, but rather to share duties according to which members could take on the most responsibility at a given time. The executive board, according to MacDonald, greatly influences the issues and events the SAAC handles. "I really like the flexibility that we have as a group in terms of what we can do," MacDonald said. MacDonald, a member of Dartmouth's women's soccer team, cited the need to "establish positive relationships between athletics and academics" as one of the most important functions of the committee. The SAAC also functions as a liaison between the athletic department and student athletes. "We want student athletes to feel comfortable coming to us with their thoughts and concerns so we can relay them to the administration," Jen Murray '09, a former member of the SAAC executive board and a member of Dartmouth's women's tennis team, said. According to Murray, the allotment of practice time in Leverone Fieldhouse is a contentious issue that comes up almost every year among athletes. "We advertise ourselves as an open forum for student athletes with any type of issue, in hopes that in the future athletes will be more willing to come to the committee with concerns or administrative problems," Murray said. Along with serving as a channel between administrators and athletes, the SAAC has attempted to broaden its impact on campus by reaching out to those athletes. "We do a lot of social events planning along with administrative work," MacDonald said.
