Track and field teams improve final marks at Heps

The Dartmouth track and field teams wrapped up their outdoor season with improved scores at Heps.
The Dartmouth track and field teams wrapped up their outdoor season with improved scores at Heps.

Dartmouth's men's squad amassed a total score of 72 points, finishing just behind Yale, which came in third with 78 points. Cornell stormed to first with a score of 199, and Princeton took second with 128 points.

The Big Green's Tim Wunderlich '09 was victorious in the men's decathlon, an event in which Dartmouth has traditionally performed well. Wunderlich was followed by Nicholas Weir '09, who finished in sixth place.

"Before the meet, we were realistically expecting to finish in the top five, so taking fourth was great," men's head coach Barry Harwick '77 said. "We had some great performances and were quite close to taking third place from Yale near the end."

Dartmouth scored a large portion of its points in the middle and long distance events. Mike Carmody '08 placed second in the 800-meter finals, finishing with a time of one minute and 50.82 seconds. Harry Norton '08, Ben True '08 and Tom Robbins '11 took the number four, five and six spots, respectively, in the 1,500-meter finals, finishing with times clustered around 3:49. Norton also placed third in the 5,000-meter race, coming through the finish in 14:38.46. Glenn Randall '09 had a strong showing in the 10,000-meter event, placing third in 30:13.44.

Another highlight for the men was the performance of the 4 x 400 meter relay team, made up of Carmody, Julian Thomas '09, Charlie Stoebe '08 and Tyler Koskenoja '07. The team placed second, with a mark of 3:13.80.

In the field events, Dartmouth's Koskenoja came in second and Wunderlich placed third in the javelin event, with throws of 60.59 meters and 60.05 meters, respectively.

"Obviously a lot of things went very well," Harwick said. "One of our goals at the start of the season was to improve on last year's outdoor Heps score, and we scored nine more points along the way this time."

The women's team also improved last year's score, finishing with a total of 47 points for a seventh place tie with Yale. Cornell, with 165 points, also won on the women's side, and Princeton was second with 141 points.

Dartmouth's field event athletes have led the team this season, and the squads did not break the trend at Heps.

Jessica Long '08 set a personal record, taking fifth place in the discus throw with a distance of 45.61 meters.

Long also threw for 53.29 meters in the hammer throw to finish in second place. She finished behind teammate Emily Daly '09, who won the event with a launch of 53.39 meters.

Jaclyn Wypler '11 tossed the javelin 39.85 meters for fifth place, and Long came in sixth with a mark of 38.76 meters.

Karen Woolley '09 finished third in the heptathlon, which consists of the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run.

In the jumping events, Sarah Klassen '10 placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.64 meters in the finals. Natalie Todd-Zebell '09 took second in the pole vault by clearing 3.65 meters.

"Natalie in particular did a great job recovering from injury this season," women's head coach Sandra Ford-Centonze said. "She did not have very much time to prepare for Heps, and we were very pleased with her success."

Dartmouth's top individual and relay qualifiers will head to the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship meet in Princeton, N.J., on May 16. The Big Green will send 20 male athletes, including all three relay teams, and 13 female athletes, as well as two women's relay teams.
