Minority views lead the way

The question of whether or not the single-sex Greek houses should continue to exist has nothing to do with whether or not a majority of the students at Dartmouth like it.

Taking a close look at sororities at Dartmouth

Flaubert said, "One is not born a woman, one becomes one." This ancient quote seems one worth contemplating in light of recent editorials, articles, discussions and graffiti which have been circulating our campus since the beginning of rush, claiming to analyze the pros and cons of Greek membership and activity. As president of one of the six sororities on campus, I feel compelled to look beyond the graffiti, beyond the finger-pointing articles and beyond the stereotypes to examine the institution which I have arduously dedicated the past year of my life to reshaping, and at the arguments which belittle a system that has been the backbone of the feminist voice I have found at Dartmouth. I would like to begin by addressing some of the women who have resigned or gone inactive this fall.

Family support

A week ago today, Dan Boyer '94 took his own life. Yesterday, friends and family gathered for a service of "celebration and thanksgiving." It is difficult to find words to describe the beauty of what happened in Rollins Chapel yesterday.

Time to say farewell

I'm saying goodbye- That's right- so long! I've been writing these damn columns too long. It's time to move on now, Temporarily at least.. I will find better tasks Upon which to release The profound genius That resides within My skull's filled with ideas! There's no way I can fail with them For twelve weeks now, I wrote and wrote. Trying to inspire thought and hope- Hope of glory and hope of praise Is what with I wrote across the days Invalid it is To go for miles Hoping to move the rank and file... In tune to my sarcastic style? Never is such a task worthwhile. Cries of arrogance and disrespect Violations that can't be checked. All this I tire of- yes, all this and more. The main thing is simple- The thoughts you ignore! In searching for basis for rapport, I've seen it clearly more and more: One woman said, "Leave!

Give the bonfire a chance

It was this time last year that I was on the ramparts of a hastily-constructed defensive position, flinging eggs at older guys who were running at me with bags of feces. While I thought this was kind of fun and probably represented the Chinese human wave attacks of the Korean war on a slightly less dangerous scale, I could see how many people would find this only mediocre, as feces does not clean that easily. Regardless, running the risk of agreeing with a certain off-campus publication of dubious integrity, the bonfire and the tremendous circle of sweaty freshman who come with it will always have a place at Dartmouth. There is much to be said about tradition and how it keeps a school together.

Denny jury was wrong

Justice has been raped again. The court decision regarding the Reginald Denny beating case should repulse every law-abiding citizen in this country.

'Where are all the black people?' That's a good question

Last weekend my aunt and her husband came to visit me. I took them for the perfunctory tour around campus on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and like most first-time visitors to Dartmouth, they were struck by its beauty. But as we were walking, my uncle turned to me and said, "Where are all the black people?

Students need free condoms

I never play the stock market. Aside from lacking even a basic understanding of what all those old, bald, white guys are actually doing when they wave those little pieces of paper at each other on the floor, it just scares me too much when companies like IBM lose half their worth in three months.

The advisers' view of the Greek system

As advisers to the Greek system at Dartmouth, we find the argument of those who oppose the single sex organizations to be arrogant and intolerant. The fraternities and sororities cannot be all the things to all people, nor do they claim to be.

Rush is a perplexing process

The most perplexing thing about rush is that it is taken so seriously. In the three years that I have gone to school here, I have seen people go on ridiculous diets to ensure that they can fit into the proper outfit for rush and I have also sat with my nervous friends who were waiting for a member of certain houses come by to tell them whether or not they got a bid.
