Biased Humanities Hiring?

|

I offer some thoughts in response to Devin Foxall's article (The Dartmouth, Jan. 29, 2002, "Horowitz: Polls prove colleges' left-wing bias") on the political and cultural opinions of Ivy League humanities faculty as reported by the poll conducted by David Horowitz and Frank Luntz. First, there is no reason to dispute the results of the poll.

Opinion

Ghost Troubles

|

I am almost definite that the North Fayerweather dormitory is haunted. Don't be alarmed, I understand that we live a sheltered life here at Dartmouth and that for most of us our idea of a crisis is forgetting to put in hair gel before going to the gym.

Opinion

Girl, You'll be a Woman ... Soon

|

Every day I open The Dartmouth, our newspaper and see the same thing. "Katie Greenwood hasn't the faintest clue." "Katie Greenwood has got it wrong." "Don't judge me just because I'm part of the Greek system." "We're inclusive." "We're mutually selective.

Opinion

On Asian American Studies

|

Chien Wen Kung's argument (The Dartmouth, Jan. 31, 2002, "Thoughts on Ethnic Studies") focuses not on the legitimacy of Asian American Studies (AAS), but on the repercussions of granting institutional support through a major or program.

Opinion

FSP

|

To the Editor: My colleagues and I in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese were surprised to read, in The Dartmouth of Monday, Feb.

Opinion

Bowling with the Virgin Mary

|

In order to discuss religious experiences during a class last week, my professor mentioned, as an example, that a few years ago the Virgin Mary appeared to a bunch of people in Wisconsin.

Opinion

Judged Unfairly

|

I read columns in The Dartmouth every day that reassure me that Dartmouth students think like me: I don't want to be judged before people can understand who I am and what I believe in.

Opinion

Freshmen Shine at the Tavern

|

To the Editor: In response to the Jan. 28, 2002 article in The Dartmouth, "DDS is short 60 student workers," I would like to say that, as area manager at the Lone Pine Tavern, I have a somewhat privileged understanding of how difficult it can be to offer quality service when you lack the staff to do it.

Opinion

Have a Little More Fun

|

To the Editor: On a day that will come sooner than you think, when Hanover is just a memory, you will probably realize that diatribes about the exclusivity of the Greek system (the system does try), while admirably passionate, are unnecessary. Recognize that Dartmouth is an exclusive institution.

Opinion

A Systematic Rebuttal

|

I write in response to Katie Greenwood's Jan. 30 column in The Dartmouth, "System Failure." While pro- and anti-Greek sentiment graces the pages of The Dartmouth all too often, Ms. Greenwood's piece is noteworthy because of its inaccuracy, hypocrisy and vindictive tone.

Opinion

Administrative Difficulties

|

To the Editor: I would like to reply, at least in part, to Katie Greenwood's Jan. 30, 2002 editorial in The Dartmouth, "System Failure." Admittedly, the Greek rush process is not perfect, and it does exclude people.

Opinion

Mutual Selection

|

To the Editor: I would like to address one aspect of Katie Greenwood's editorial in The Dartmouth, "System Failure," from Jan.

Opinion

The Possibility of Inter-group Dating

|

To the Editor: I applaud the article, "Students talk inter-group dating," in the Jan. 31 issue of The Dartmouth, for its objective representation of the "crossing the line" discussion, held in Cutter-Shabazz.

Opinion

What Are You Talking About?

|

The backlash of recent on-campus events, especially in light Martin Luther King Day, has brought to the forefront of discussion here at Dartmouth a much-hyped question that has simmered nationally for years: that of diversity and acceptance.

Opinion

The Week

|

The Right to be a Prisoner Following intense criticism, the Bush administration announced this week that it would reconsider its previous decision that prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba not be covered by the Third Geneva Convention.

Opinion

Assuming the Responsibility

|

As the vice president of the Panhellenic Council until as recently as last week, I hold myself personally accountable for everything (the good and the bad) that occurred during this year's Panhellenic winter recruitment.
