The word etiquette brings to mind white-gloved girls, pearls and afternoon tea. At Dartmouth, well-mannered might not mean being quite so strait-laced, but words of wisdom could certainly remind us of a daintier time. The Hanover Police Department has decided to alter its procedures for arresting students when officers respond to alcohol-related medical calls, according to a message sent by acting Dean of the College Sylvia Spears to the Dartmouth community Thursday evening.

In an effort to reduce spending on employee benefits and compensation by $9 million over the next two fiscal years, College administrators announced on Tuesday proposed changes to the benefits package provided to faculty and staff. The changes include reductions in the College's contributionto employee retirement plans, increases in health insurance copayments and deductible levels, and the implementation of a more steeply graduated system for the College's contribution to employee health insurance plan costs, according to the College Office of Human Resources web site.

Thirty-eight current employees and full student grants for families with incomes over $75,000 will be the first specific casualties in the College's efforts to mitigate its $100-million budget shortfall, the College Office of Public Affairs announced in a press release Monday afternoon. The budget plan, which College President Jim Yong Kim submitted to the Board of Trustees over the weekend, also finds $25 million in savings in "administrative reorganization and restructuring," the largest single segment of the proposed cutbacks.

Evaluations of peer universities a key component of U.S. News & World Report's college rankings have little to do with graduation rates, faculty or selectivity, according to new research published in the American Journal of Education. Michael N. Bastedo of the University of Michigan and Nicholas A. Bowman of the University of Notre Dame found that perceptions of academic quality among evaluators remained highly consistent over time, despite changes in universities' educational resources, according to Inside Higher Ed. "In other words, the way you get a good reputational score and in turn a good ranking is to already have a good ranking," Inside Higher Ed reported.

A press release posted on the College's web site stated that the campaign had received $1.308 billion as of the official Dec. 31, 2009 closing date for fund raising. The campaign included a $50 million donation earmarked for the construction of the Visual Arts Center, as well as $122 million in donations slated for undergraduate financial aid.

Nov. 12, 7:15 p.m. North Main Street Hanover Police received a report of an assault near Baker-Berry Library involving two 19-year-old male Dartmouth students. One of the students allegedly attempted to steal the other student's red hat. After the student wearing the hat had reportedly walked away, the suspect confronted the student again and allegedly assaulted him. Hanover Police is still investigating the case.

Oct. 26, 2:11 p.m.Etna RoadA woman babysitting her grandchild reported to Hanover Police that she had received several suspicious phone calls. While at home with the child, the woman received a call supposedly from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center informing her that the H1N1 vaccine was available for the child and that she should bring the child to the hospital to receive the vaccination. DHMC officials, however, said that they make no such calls.
