Richardson '74 saves Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro

Courtesy of Penn Veterinary Medicine Dean Richardson '74 recently found himself in the center of a media circus after successfully performing a challenging surgery on Kentucky Derby winning horse Barbaro, whose fortune took a turn for the worse only two weeks after his Derby win. The three-year-old colt, who earned $2.3 million since he started racing last October, suffered life-threatening injuries to his right hind ankle in Baltimore, Md., about five weeks ago at the Pimlico Race Course. On May 20, in front of a record Preakness Stakes crowd, the horse fractured three bones in his right hind ankle only 130 meters into his seventh race.

True '08 headed to national meet

Several of Dartmouth's top athletes traveled to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the NCAA Track and Field East Regional Meet, looking to end their season on the right note -- or continue on to the national meet with a great performance. Ben True '08 continued to dominate in the 1500 and his second-place finish earned him a chance to compete on the national stage.

Big Green sails to gritty comeback

While the women's sailors from the College of Charleston may have taken home the championship in this year's Women's Dinghy National Championships, the Big Green ladies proved their mettle, overcoming the largest deficit of the field to snare a fifth place overall finish and an All-American Honorable Mention for team captain and skipper Emily East '06. Dartmouth assistant coach John Storck best summed up the team's performance in Charleston, S.C. "No team came from farther behind to ultimately finish as well.

Cushman '03 outlegs Flutie in charity drop-kicking contest

Courtesy of Josh Cushman As a child, Josh Cushman '03 used to drop kick a football back and forth with his brother in the backyard of his house. He never thought that this skill would pay off one day. Two Saturdays ago, Cushman and his brother Jared entered a drop-kicking contest sponsored by the Doug Flutie Foundation in Boston on a whim.




The Dartmouth heavyweight freshman eight finished second in the third level final and 14th overall at Eastern Sprints Sunday in Worcester, Mass.

Men's lightweight rowers finish sixth at Eastern Sprints

Kawakahi Amina / The Dartmouth Staff The men's heavyweight and lightweight crew seasons culminated Sunday at the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Despite tough competition, the lightweight team managed to get three of four teams into the grand finals -- a feat that Dartmouth lightweight coach Steve Perry said the team has not accomplished in several years.
