Men's soccer continues to struggle

Dartmouth soccer will look to rebound next weekend against Yale.
Dartmouth soccer will look to rebound next weekend against Yale.

The Tigers, celebrating 100 years of soccer at Princeton, started the game more positively and had a few chances in front of netminder Rowan Anders '07 before they managed to score. In the 35th minute, senior Jame Wunsch played the ball out of Princeton's defensive end, finding freshman Devin Muntz, who redirected it to junior striker Kyle McHugh. Left one-on-one against Anders, McHugh slotted the ball home for the only goal of the game. Neither team managed to seriously threaten its opponent's goal throughout the rest of the first half, with the Tiger having a 6-3 advantage in shots at the end of the first period.

Big Green Head Coach Jeffrey Cook made a few substitutions during the break and the team started the second half looking refreshed. However, shots by Tom Lobben '08, Daniel Keat '10 and Pumi Maqubela '10 all failed to hit the target. Dartmouth controlled play in the second half, taking eight shots to the Tigers' five, but keeper Joe Walter managed to preserve his shutout with five saves, including three in the second half. Rowan Anders finished the game with four saves, two in each half.

In the end, the teams were evenly matched in almost all components of play, but the Tigers managed to preserve their lead and come out on top. Both teams ended the game with 11 shots, five of which fell on goal. The Big Green was lead by Mike Ordonez '08, who shot four times, hitting the target twice. Mark Limpert '07 and Lobben were also active throughout the game, each recording two shots. Dartmouth had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the team's primary weakness of not being able to convert the chances they create, showed once again.

After two games away from home, the Big Green will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Sacred Heart at 3:30pm at Chase Field. The next four games will provide a chance for the team to turn things around and bring themselves back into the race for the Ivy League title. On Sunday, Oct. 8, Dartmouth will host 2005 co-champions Yale, while a week later, current league leader Penn will also visit Hanover.
