Big Green Bikes: What is to be done?

|

To the Editor: I would like to commend D. Bradley Bate '04 for his thoughtful letter to the editor blaming the student body for the failure of the Big Green Bikes program ("Campus responsible for Big Green Bike failure," April 18). I am sure Bate would also agree that the failure of the Soviet Union can be traced to the "total lack of respect and responsibility" of the Russian people. Communal property is a viable and time-tested idea, and I feel that the program was a great leap forward for Dartmouth.

Why I Hate CNN

I hate CNN. And it has nothing to do with politics. Ever since The New York Times Online created "Times Select," forcing me to search LexisNexis in order to read David Brooks and Thomas L.

Encouraging healthy eating

|

To the Editor: I think there's an important clarification that needs to be made in Andrew Lane's "Battling Obesity" (April 14). He imprudishly begins with the line that "Americans need to put down the fork," only to later clarify that obesity is caused by "poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyles." While the first line was likely meant as nothing more than rhetoric, it can actually reinforce the dangerous misunderstanding that many young women and men around us share: that eating makes you fat.

Campus responsible for Big Green Bike failure

|

To the Editor: I was dismayed to see Robert Butts' opinion response to the article about the Big Green Bikes program ("How Many Zaps Does it Take," April 13), in which the blame was placed squarely on the Student Assembly for failing to learn from the outcomes of past bike programs on campus. While it is certainly prudent to ask why this experiment was repeated so many times, it's also important to ask why the Dartmouth student body cannot be trusted with communal bikes.

Defining the "Proper Way"

|

A few weeks ago, after having solved all the major political issues, I turned to the problems of life and gave an analysis of the merits of the night-time shower, the optimal eating paradigm and the excessive use of the word "random." This week, I turn to more serious philosophical dilemmas and vexing existential problems: midterms, greetings, computers and thank yous. As week four of the term moves in, Dartmouth students are already swamped with midterm papers, tests, exams and the like.

Battling Obesity

Americans need to put down the fork. Our country is becoming the most obese in the world. The overweight majority of our population is not only unsightly but expensive and unhealthy. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese.

Live Up to Your Commitment

The other day I was listening to Rush Limbaugh, and he mentioned the immigration debate. He said how one day back in the 1980s he talked to his grandfather about immigration, and his grandfather's response was "Oh, Lord, they're still talking about that?

How Many "Zaps" Does It Take?

College is supposedly a place of learning. In the psychological sense, learning implies behavioral and cognitive modification, often as the result of experience and conditioning. Learning, in its simplest form, is not a particularly difficult thing.

Safety and Security Strikes Out

|

Any of the Dartmouth fans who attended this weekend's double-header against Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania at Red Rolfe field will tell you that heckling at baseball games, also known as America's favorite pastime -- heckling, not baseball -- is on the verge of extermination. Safety and Security, that loveable institution that safeguards our well-being and constitutional rights while here at Dartmouth, has decided that the time has come to, yet again, destroy something that normal people find entertaining and innocuous.

The Dartmouth misses out on unrecognized talent

To the Editor: The Dartmouth recently identified "three academic teams" that have qualified to national tournaments ("Three academic teams make national comps.," April 6). However, this article failed to acknowledge the accomplishments of the other Dartmouth academic teams.

Dartmouth is more than a degree

|

To the Editor: Pattrick Mattimore '74's April 6 tirade sounded more like the upset parent of a denied applicant than a valid criticism of the value of Dartmouth's education ("High Demand, Unclear Quality," April 6). He offered little solid evidence to back up his argument that perhaps we (as in the collective field of applicants and parents, I suppose) should "...take our business elsewhere." Further, his analogies between Coca-Cola, the restaurant industry and a college education are shallow at best. They fail to acknowledge that the value of education at a selective institution like Dartmouth comes not only from the quality of college itself but from the quality of the students with which you share that education. And then there is the matter of the top tier professors, extensive resources, incomparable academics, the $492,000-per-student endowment, rich history, beautiful campus, famous speakers and more.

I do not watch TV very regularly. As a matter of fact, while at Dartmouth, the only occasions when I have stuck to watching the black boxes on a regular basis have been during my breaks at home in Mexico.
