Gender-neutral housing deemed success by ORL

As the first-ever term of gender-neutral housing at Dartmouth comes to a close, the Office of Residential Life has begun to look back at its newly instituted gender-neutral housing program floor and, based on positive feedback, does not foresee a need to make any significant changes in the coming terms. Out of the 32 students who applied for this special housing, 16 students and one undergraduate advisor were eventually chosen because they showed an active interest in participating in the model of a shared community which would hold programs and dinners focused on discussing gender-related issues. Assistant Dean of Student Life and advisor to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender students Pam Misener has taken the position as lead advisor for the students living on the floor, and attends the floor's weekly Sunday dinners. "We really wanted the residents to have a chance to be engaged in the decisions about how we would organize ourselves, so it took a little longer to really hit a rhythm," Misener said.

Faculty tries to alter health benefits deal

Following widespread faculty dissatisfaction with a College proposal to reduce healthcare benefits for retiring faculty and staff, the Committee on Faculty has initiated efforts to produce a new, altered version of the plan for review by the Dartmouth financial officers. Mathematics professor Peter Winkler, chair of the COF, said that the aim of the new plan will be to soften the impact of the reductions. "Our object is, starting with the plan that [Adam Keller, executive vice president for finance and administration,] proposed at the faculty meeting, to try to find one which is gentle and acceptable, but hopefully still meets the Board of Trustees expectations," Winkler said. The COF will meet with Keller and other College officials at least three times, beginning Friday, to review suggestions submitted by faculty.

Birth control remains free at Dartmouth

Sarah Irving / The Dartmouth Staff Although the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 has led students at other colleges to encounter stiff cost increases in birth control, Dartmouth has maintained its policy of providing birth control for free to students under the Dartmouth Student Group Health Plan. "We are here as a service to students," said Jeff Licht, staff pharmacist at Dick's House. The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, supposedly aimed at countering Medicaid abuses, took away incentives for drug manufacturers to offer colleges large discounts on certain drugs, including birth control. Before the act was passed, such discounts did not calculate against drug companies' formulae for rebates they paid to states in exchange for participation in Medicaid.
