Losing (and Regaining) Touch

|

You were inseparable, attached at the hip for four years. Laboring through the hallowed halls of Pittsfield High School or The Wilkshire Academy or wherever you attended, you shared it all -- assemblies, homecomings, lab periods -- the whole enchilada.

Harvard: Where the Rhodes roam

At the close of his junior year at Harvard University, Kweli Washington decided to apply for the Rhodes Scholarship "on a whim." "I knew of other people who had applied," he said.

Baseball downs Babson in its East Coast opener

|

The baseball team will try to improve on their 4-6 record as they travel to Merrimack College for a non-conference bout tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game follows a 9-6 Big Green victory over Babson College on Wednesday and a western spring break series which brought the team to an early 3-6 record. In Wednesday's game, Dartmouth took an early 1-0 lead before exploding for four runs in the third inning to all but put away the Babson squad. Sophomore Mike Conway sent a shot up the middle for the spot on first base before co-Captain Andrew Spencer earned a walk to get men on first and second. Aaron Meyer '00 belted a double into the outfield to send Conway and Spencer trotting home.

Women and Philosophy, Part II

Although I have written a number of provocative articles in the past, I do not remember a writing of mine that attracted more scathing criticisms than the one I wrote approximately a year ago.

Women's golf team places third twice in Bermuda

|

Unfazed by a five-month hiatus from competition, the women's golf team traveled to Bermuda over Spring Break to train and returned with a pair of third place finishes in tournament play. Last October, the women received a number of outstanding individual performances en route to ending their fall season with a strong eighth place finish in the ECAC Championships. Bermuda's warm temperatures and cloudless skies gave the linksters the opportunity to pick up their games almost where they left off in the fall, and the women took full advantage of the situation. Throughout the trip they played and practiced on three different courses, one of which, Mid-Ocean, is ranked among the top 100 courses in the world. "It was a fun course to play," Lauren Epstein '00 said.

NBC still dominates television

|

The latest survey of prime-time television ratings re-affirm NBC's stranglehold on America's prime time television. A recent report compiled by the Neilson Media Research Company shows "Seinfeld" reigning solidly over prime time programming, it's power derived from an average weekly rating of 18.6. One television rating point translates into 970,000 households whose television sets were tuned to the program at some point during it's duration.

Funky Love: 'Love Jones' soundtrack's selections delight

|

Like the animated Wonder Twins of yesterday, "Love Jones" the movie and soundtrack form one tumultous, powerful hurricane composed of equal parts R&B heartache and soul-torn grief. The soundtrack, which features some of the brightest lights in the R&B landscape like Lauryn Hill of Fugee's fame and jazz chanteuse Cassandra Wilson, seems a right fit for the movie's irregular cut -- a 1990s romantic story of love and modern courtship which centers around two Afro-American protagonists. Winner of the jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival where it premiered, "Love Jones" has billed itself as a sophisticated, intelligent portrayal of relationships and love in the Afro-American community.

In his first week as a collegiate ballplayer, Nickerson led the Ivy League batting stats with a whopping .438 average, hitting 14-for-32 over the break.

Green Card Provides a Valuable Service to Students

|

To the Editor: I have been an employee of the Hanover Green Card for nearly two years and I was both surprised and hurt by Sander Schlichter's editorial yesterday, "Stalked by the Green Card." [March 25, The Dartmouth] Although I did not personally handle what may or may not have happened with Schlichter's account this summer, I am confident that we do everything in our power to correct any mistakes we or our Green Card vendors make.

The Price of Status

|

Last term we found out that (surprise!) Dartmouth tuition will increase next year. A less than five percent increase sounds like a reasonable figure; a little inflation, a little price increase.
