Baseball downs Babson in its East Coast opener

The baseball team will try to improve on their 4-6 record as they travel to Merrimack College for a non-conference bout tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The game follows a 9-6 Big Green victory over Babson College on Wednesday and a western spring break series which brought the team to an early 3-6 record.

In Wednesday's game, Dartmouth took an early 1-0 lead before exploding for four runs in the third inning to all but put away the Babson squad.

Sophomore Mike Conway sent a shot up the middle for the spot on first base before co-Captain Andrew Spencer earned a walk to get men on first and second.

Aaron Meyer '00 belted a double into the outfield to send Conway and Spencer trotting home. Then, freshman Brian Nickerson took a wild pitch for the team to put two Green and White players on base.

Meyer eventually scored when a Babson throw to third went high and long. Eric Anderson '99 popped up a sacrifice fly to send Nickerson across the plate.

Spencer said he's especially pleased with the performance of the rookies this season.

"The freshmen have brought a tremendous work ethic to this team that inspires everybody right up through the seniors," he said. "They have great skills and they're a fun bunch to have on the team."

On the mound on Wednesday, Junior Eric Walania threw 6 2/3 innings for the win, while Dan Godfrey '98 kept the bases clear in the final innings to earn the save.

"I thought this was a great way to start off our East Coast season," Head Coach Bob Whalen said.

As for tomorrow's game against Merrimack, Spencer is confident that his team can add to its win column.

"We've played some good ball recently and I think we just need to stay focused against these non-conference teams so that we can be ready once the Ivy season starts," he said.
