Dartmouth not included in Department of Justice antitrust investigation

The College has not received a letter from the Department of Justice about potential violations of antitrust law in its admissions practices, College spokesperson Diana Lawrence wrote in an email. The DOJ sent such a letter to several colleges and universities last week as part of an investigation into these schools’ early decision policies, under which students can be admitted to a school early in exchange for a binding commitment to attend that institution.

Discussions, films and workshops held during Week of Action

This year, the College’s Week of Action, which is a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, featured talk, workshops and movie screenings. The College’s Student Wellness Center, Dartmouth Bystander Initiative, the Week of Action planning committee, Sexual Assault Peer Alliance, WISE and other campus organizations helped plan the new events, held last week.

For Nicole Knape ’19, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina who recently finished her coursework for medical school, completing pre-health requirements has been a time-consuming and challenging task.

Divest Dartmouth holds first divestment conference at the College

Divest Dartmouth and the Inter-Community Council held their first divestment conference on April 7, which included workshops and a keynote speech by former Unity College President Stephen Mulkey, who helped lead the first college fossil fuel divestment in the nation. Students from Middlebury College, Mount Holyoke College, Princeton University, Smith College, Tufts University, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Vermont were in attendance, as well as around 50 people from the College, according to Divest Dartmouth member and event organizer Lily Zhang ’18. The conference was comprised of several workshops that focused on the intersectionality of divestment and how to improve divestment campaigns.

In a basketball season marked by parity and scandal, it was only fitting that the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship was won by a team which made one of the most dominant runs in recent history while led by a clean-cut coach, referring both to his lack of involvement in the most recent benefits scandal and to the fact that he’s always dressed to the nines with his suits. The Villanova University Wildcats, the 1-seed in the East Region, defeated the University of Michigan Wolverines, the 3-seed in the West Region, 79-62 last Monday.

Dartmouth Football hires new wide-receiver coach, Dave Shula ’81

Dartmouth football head coach Buddy Teevens ’79 officially announced the hiring of wide receiver coach Dave Shula ’81 two weeks ago, marking a drastic change in the football staff for the upcoming 2018-19 football season. Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, Shula has had an extensive background in the National Football League, having spent one year as a player for the then-Baltimore Colts and nearly 15 years as a coach for the Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals.
