In response to women's history month, the East Wheelock Cluster sponsored a panel of female athletes last night to speak on "the past, present and future of women in sports," according to Undergraduate Advisor Dave Grelotti '96. Grelotti, along with the other East Wheelock Cluster UGAs and Associate Director of Athletics Joann Harper, planned the event and chose the three female athletes and one coach who spoke. Field Hockey Coach Julie Dayton, Kate Andrews '96, Sally Annis '97 and Sarah Billmeier '99 spoke on their experiences as women in the Dartmouth athletic program. Andrews, co-captain of this past year's women's soccer team, spoke of what athletics does for a woman. "It's a character builder," she said.
Senior to continue to play lacrosse in Austrailia after graduation
The freshman men's first light weight crew earned this week's Athlete of the Week after sweeping the competition at Eastern Sprints. Sprints is the culmination of the crew season for every team involved. The gold medal at Sprints continues the first freshman boat's undefeated status this season. The crew came back from behind Princeton during the race.
Co-Captain and lone senior Hersey sees progression over time
Women's basketball Coach Chris Wielgus has gone and done it again. Much to the dismay of Ivy League opponents, the Big Green's lineup will boast four more blue chippers in the 1996-97 season. Olivia Britt, a 6'4" center from Hoover, Alabama comes in with high praise from Wielgus. "She's the missing link," Wielgus said.
It was the biggest event of the season. It was what the team had been training for all year long.
Kristin Manwaring '96, Amy Winchester '96 and Adam Nelson '97 each added another feather to their caps this weekend at the ECAC/IC4A championships at George Mason University. On Sunday Manwaring blew away competition in the 1,500 meters, clocking 4:23.00 for the easy win. Luckily for the egos of her competitors, she ran her fastest time on Saturday in the qualifying heats, a blistering 4:18.94. Her time breaks her own school record, but more importantly is good enough to automatically qualify her for the NCAA Championships and the U.S.
The Ivy League selection committee recently announced the members of this year's All-Ivy League lacrosse teams. The Dartmouth lacrosse programs contributed eight players to the two teams.
After knocking national champ Brown out of race, finish sixth
This year proved to be a golden year for the men's rugby club. Under the leadership of co-Captains Todd Aaron '96 and Dan Kalafatas '96 and President Douglas Asano '96 the men's rugby team completed its second straight undefeated year in the New England Division I League. "In the fall, for the second straight year, we went undefeated," Asano said.
The men's and women's water polo club teams have completed another year of competition and decided to make some changes in their program in the interest of more success next year. The men, who fielded two teams for their fall season, are aiming for a national championship in the coming year, and the women will look to build on advances they have made in their first two years as a program. During the fall, the traditional season for the men, the two men's teams were joined by a team of women who competed in the men's league.
Women's Swim Coach Betsy Mitchell will not be back next season to continue to lead her team to the recent success it has seen. Instead, Mitchell will explore another side of college life.
Everyone has seen this die hard bunch with their multicolored flying saucers in hand, practicing "hammer" tosses and long cuts come rain or shine on the Green. But who has seen the rag tag bunch of ultimate Frisbee players actually compete? For those who don't know, the Dartmouth ultimate Frisbee team, a club sport supported by only a $500 per year stipend from the athletic department, wrapped up its best season in 10 years this spring ranked 30th nationally -- quite an improvement from 95th last year. This year's team is heavily manned by '99s who have been working hard to learn the tools of the trade.
Kristin Pierce '96 took the 5,000 meters in 17:23.97 at last weekend's New England Championships to bring home not only a win, but also All-New England honors. In addition to her success at New Englands, Pierce has found success throughout the season.
As traditional Big Green spring sports come to a close, the anticipation for next fall is growing on the football practice fields.

Neither of the Big Green track squads had its strongest showing this past weekend at New England championships, mostly because athletes from both squads sat the meet out. Fellow Ivy-Leaguer Brown won the men's meet held at Williams.
The men's heavyweight crew team got back in the win column this weekend with an impressive home victory over Syracuse. Right from the start of the race, it was apparent that the Big Green meant business as they pulled out to an early lead.
