Men's golf team qualifies for ECACs

It took a tie breaker, but the men's golf team pulled off an impressive win yesterday afternoon at the Northern New England ECAC Qualifiers.

The Big Green tied with Boston College, as both teams shot a 316 on the day. To break the tie, each team submits its fifth place finisher's score. For Dartmouth, senior Jay Lavendar's 84 was two better than BC's James Polmonari, so the Big Green snagged the win.

Co-Captain Mackenzie Hurd '98 led Dartmouth to victory shooting 77, which earned him a second place finish. For the Big Green Chris Welty (78) and Jon Heaton (79) rounded out the top 10, placing fourth and 10th respectively. Senior co-Captain Steve Sugarman placed 20th, shooting 82.

Sugarman said the cold weather, combined with the 20-25 mph winds played havoc for the Big Green and made the already difficult course even more unmanageable.

"There were some tough conditions so the scores were a little higher than we would have liked them to be, but we accomplished what we set out to do," Sugarman said. "We thought it was a good showing, and we proved to other teams that we will be a top contender this season.

The victory qualifies the Big Green for the ECAC Championships Oct. 13-14.

This weekend, Dartmouth travels to Amherst for the annual Toski Invitational. The Big Green have done well at the tournament in past and are looking for it to be a good tune-up for the ECACs.

"I think we're looking to win it," Sugarman said. "I think we've showed that it is all up to us. We have the talent to do well, and we are happy with how the team has started the season."
