November Madness

Duke was unquestionably the finest team in college basketball last year -- until they played Connecticut for the national title. During the off-season the Blue Devils lost four players to the first round of the NBA draft, including Player of the Year Elton Brand, rendering themselves mortal for the 1999-2000 NCAA basketball season.

Football heads to Columbia in search of second win

After the football team lost 44-3 at Yale, nobody thought the season could get any worse After Dartmouth beat Cornell the following week, everyone thought things were looking up. They were wrong. Last weekend in Cambridge the Big Green lost to their despised rival Harvard 63-21, besting [or rather worsting] their margin of defeat at Yale by a single point.

Dafoe is signed, finally

Bruins fans, the wait is finally over. We can all move on with our lives now. Byron Dafoe is signed. After several months of deadlock over his contract, Dafoe has reached an agreement with Bruins general manager/president Harry Sinden.

Merryfield '00 digs her way to top

For Janna Merryfield '00, her talent in volleyball came as somewhat of a surprise. "Somebody's dad told me they thought I'd be good," she said, and great success on the court followed. Growing up outside of Seattle, Wash., Merryfield played soccer and basketball during her youth.

Hoop Dreams

Twenty-nine teams, one dream. The marathon journey that is the NBA regular season kicked off last night with 13 games on tap. The first complete NBA season in the post-Jordan era since1994 will include several new rules changes imposed and ratified by the league's Board of Governors this past summer. Expect a lot of whistles from NBA referees this season as there will be a more strict interpretation of foul calls.

Sailing wins Urn Trophy again

In a weekend full of Dartmouth athletic action, the sailing team was not to be left out. In fact, the sailing team took to the waters of Boston and came home with some serious hardware. At Harvard, the Big Green took the Victorian Coffee Urn Trophy for the third year in a row.

Men's soccer blanks UNH, 2-0

Last weekend, Dartmouth dropped a horrendous double overtime game to the Cornell Big Red. Even though the score was close, the game was a disappointment for fans and players alike.

Women's soccer defeats BU, 3-1

|

All-American candidate Melissa Roth '00 scored two goals and assisted on another as the Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated Boston University, 3-1, yesterday at Singer Family Park in Manchester, N.H. The Big Green picked up its third straight victory to improve their season record to 8-6-1.

Women's volleyball loses to UNH, 3-1

The Dartmouth College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat yesterday as they faced the University of New Hampshire for the second time this season. The match lowers Dartmouth's record to 9-12 while the Wildcats' record improves to 18-8, as they continued a ten-match win streak. The Big Green showed improvement from their last meeting with New Hampshire, as they took the third game 15-10.

Green football looks for first win against Big Red

Dartmouth's biggest home football crowd of every season comes during Homecoming. The myriad alumni who have briefly returned to their alma mater will take home with them the images of this event at least until the next time they come back to the College -- in a year, five years, a decade.

For the Big Green men's soccer team, Homecoming weekend could mean two things. It could be a turning point when the Big Green finally find the intangible they've been missing up to this point, and start to win.
