Women's soccer blanks Vandy

|

The Dartmouth women's soccer team evoked memories of last year's Ivy League championship in yesterday's 4-0 victory over Vanderbilt. The Dartmouth squad was in command from the get-go, but finally etched onto the scoreboard thanks to two opportunistic strikes from freshman midfielder Mary McVeigh. On Dartmouth's veteran-filled roster, another freshman Johanna Putnam and a junior, Gretchen Bell, joined McVeigh in Dartmouth's offensive explosion as the Big Green recovered from its early-season goal drought. "We all felt it come together on the field today," McVeigh said.

M-E-T-S! Perhaps that's an acronym for Miserable End To Season. The team that has gone from underachievers to overachievers back to underachievers again all in the same 162-game season.

The First Step

With the campus eagerly awaiting daily news regarding the Initiative and its impact on the social life on campus, it is nice to know that the Initiative is not just separating campus, but also uniting it -- through athletics. Yesterday's landmark announcement by Dean of the College Jim Larimore that all regular season athletic events will be free to undergraduate and graduate students at the College is a wonderful step in the right direction, but there are still more steps to climb. Anyone who watched the women's lacrosse team travel to the NCAA Tournament or has seen the football team tough one out in the late November snow realizes that our athletic teams unite the campus more than a party or an event in Collis could ever do. There is something about watching your classmates and friends that injects school pride into the campus and the community. Last winter, when the Athletic Department offered free student tickets to a hockey game against St.

Football to face tough test in 'Gate

|

Following a 17-6 opening-day loss at Pennsylvania last Saturday, the Green welcome Colgate and star quarterback Ryan Vena to Memorial Field tomorrow. Not only will Vena make reaching the .500 mark tough, but also Colgate's power running game and option offense should challenge the Green's veteran defense. "They have the best offensive line we'll face all year," Lyons said.

All regular season tix to be free

|

Students will now be able to gain free admission to all Dartmouth regular season athletic events, a campus-wide blitz from Dean of the College Jim Larimore revealed yesterday. This announcement was the latest in the administration's "focus on improving the social life of students." This change in policy was made public at this time so that students can take advantage of the announcement for tomorrow's football game against Colgate, which will be Dartmouth's first home game of the season. Bob Gaudet '81, head coach of the men's hockey team, was excited about the positive effect free admission could have at his team's already highly attended games. "I think it's great," Gaudet said, "It's going to help ignite that Dartmouth spirit at sporting events.

Women's soccer wins first game of year 1-0 vs. UVM

|

After losing its first three games of the season, the Dartmouth womens soccer team (1-3) finally saw a bright light on cold and wet Chase Field yesterday afternoon in defeating the University of Vermont (2-5), 1-0. On a soggy, slow field under continuous misty rain, the Big Green dominated their first home game to put an end to its worst start in 18 years. "[It was] a big win because it started us on the right road for the rest of the season," senior Katherine Roda 00 said. "[It] was the first time we really put things together as a team.

Callen pick for new women's tennis coach

|

After being ranked the number one singles player in the NCAA East for women's tennis, touring the WTA for three years as a professional player, and acting as an assistant women's tennis coach at Harvard University, Jennifer Callen has settled down at Dartmouth College. Athletic Director Richard Jaeger announced Callen's selection as the women's tennis head coach yesterday after Chris Kerr's departure this past June.
