Squash experiences mixed week

Women's Squash

The Dartmouth women's squash team improved its record to 7-1 on Sunday with a pair of wins over Yale -- whom they beat 5-4 -- and Colby -- where the score was 8-1 -- in New Haven.

The victories culminated a long but successful weekend for the team, during which Dartmouth played four road matches, winning three of them.

"We had an amazing win against Yale," captain Carolyn Levine '00 said. "The entire team put an incredible amount of energy into the match and it really paid off."

Of particular note this weekend was the strength of the freshmen, particularly Abigail Drachman-Jones '03.

"Abigail Drachman-Jones has won our two most important clinchers this season," Levine said. "She represents a toughness among the freshman players that usually you don't see until junior year."

On Saturday, at Trinity College, Dartmouth was able to only take one game away from Trinity, losing 8-1. The match marked the first loss by the women in a dual match all season. Abigail Clark '02, playing in the eighth position for the women, had the only victory, winning by a score of 3-0.

"We were expecting a tough match against Trinity, they have a very strong team," Levine said. "Abigail Clark played a terrific match."

However, Dartmouth bounced right back on Saturday, shutting out Vassar 9-0.

The impressive weekend for Dartmouth followed Dartmouth's sound victory last Wednesday, when the women won their match versus Amherst, 8-1.

Against Amherst, the Big Green's top seed, Sarah West '02, took her match in four games, and Dartmouth won seven of its next eight matches by a 3-0 score.

"Our team was pre-season ranked pretty low," Levine said. "I think much of that was due to the fact we have such a young team. However, the freshmen this year have shown incredible strength and poise on the courts. They have really stepped up to the challenge which has allowed us to surprise a lot of these teams."

The women travel to Princeton on Jan. 29-30 for the Constable Tournament.

Men's Squash

This past week has been a busy one for squash. The Dartmouth men's squash team had an extremely mixed day on Sunday, shutting out Colby 9-0, but only managing to take one game away from Yale, losing by a score of 8-1. The win and loss give Dartmouth a record of 6-4 on the season.

The Big Green had a similar day on Saturday at Trinity College. Dartmouth started the day by getting blanked by Trinity. The highlight of the match for Dartmouth came from top seed Beau River '00, who took his opponent to a fifth game, but ultimately fell in that game by a score of 17-16.

Dartmouth promptly responded to the loss by shutting out Vassar, 9-0, later in the day.

Last Wednesday, the Big Green came away with an easy 7-2 win over Amherst. Beau River forced current U.S. National Champion Dave McNeely into a fifth game before falling.

Dartmouth's next match is at home against Tufts and Harvard on Wednesday, Feb. 2.

Men's Swimming and Diving

The Dartmouth men's swim team lost a dual meet at Princeton on Sunday, 169-87, despite the second place finish of Mike Vucovich '00 in the 50 yard breaststroke.

Other impressive performances for Dartmouth came from Nathan Fidel '02, who placed third in the 100 fly and 100 back, and Scott Gabbard '02, who took third in the 50 backstroke.

Dartmouth's next meet is at home against Yale and Pennsylvania on Saturday at Karl Michael Pool.

Women's Swimming and Diving

The Dartmouth women's swim team was defeated by Princeton, 153-123, in an away meet on Sunday.

Dartmouth received a strong showing from Sarah Burgamy '00, who had a personal best time of 31.34 in the 50 yard breaststroke. Diver Danielle Fritze '02 had yet another strong meet, taking second from the three-meter board and third from the one-meter.

Dartmouth's next meet is away at Vermont tomorrow.
