The Dartmouth sailing teams had another successful weekend as the co-eds claimed the inaugural Lake Champlain Trophy, and the women's team qualified for the Atlantic Coast Championships. The Big Green finished the two-day, ten-team Lake Champlain regatta with 41 points, besting Tufts' 62, Rhode Island's 66 and Vermont's 81. The Lake Champlain Regatta, hosted by the University of Vermont, was marked by heavy winds and high seas. After the first day of sailing, the Big Green pairing of skipper John Diskant '04 and crew Clementine James '05 stood on top of the standings in Division A, although only three points clear of second-place Rhode Island.

The Dartmouth women's soccer team will step onto Chase Field Sunday at noon in an Ivy League match-up against Columbia, hoping to capitalize on the momentum gathered after Wednesday's rousing 2-0 win over Syracuse. A few key changes in lineup and pregame warmup seemed to make the difference in Wednesday's match, helping the Big Green avoid the disastrous string of early goals-against that had hampered earlier efforts.

Last Saturday, in the first quarter of a 49-17 loss at Holy Cross, Dartmouth's All-American candidate quarterback, Greg Smith '02, broke the middle finger of his throwing hand to all but certainly end his spectacular season. To that point, he was leading the Ivies in every major passing category and had rallied the Big Green to the point where it looked like it might have a shot to contend for a league title This week, Smith had surgery on his hand at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, officially ending his season and possibly his career. Here, Smith speaks about the season that was, the season that could have been and what he thinks the future holds for Dartmouth football and its new quarterback"freshman Evan Love. The veteran leadership, the strong goaltending, the defensive style, the national title hopes -- all of that will be on display for the first time tonight at 5 at Thompson Arena as the Dartmouth men's hockey team welcomes McGill for an exhibition game. But don't expect this Big Green lineup to resemble perfectly the one that head coach Bob Gaudet '81 hopes to bring to St.
Some may call it a slugfest, others a rivalry. Either way, when Dartmouth (3-5, 0-2 Ivy) and Columbia tangle in an Ivy League men's soccer match, it is always a war. Dartmouth was riding high last year when it traveled to the Big Apple to tangle with the Lions, but left feeling all blue after the Lions stole a 1-0 victory. This year the Big Green hopes to turn the tables, and continue its climb back into the Ivy League title hunt. "This weekend's game is a huge game for us," defender Zach Schwartz '02 said.
Nothing frustrates an athlete more than being forced to the bench by an injury. Ask Terrell Davis, Bo Jackson, Peter Forsberg, Kerry Wood or Dartmouth volleyball star Jen Madsen. Madsen suffered a broken thumb during a routine drill in practice a couple weeks ago.

It's the beginning of a new era for Dartmouth football. When senior quarterback and All-American candidate Greg Smith '02 broke his middle finger in last week's 49-17 demolition at the hands of Holy Cross, the Big Green lost not only its best player, but its identity as well. Everything has changed.
