Sports coverage critique strikes out

To the Editor: In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a former editor of The Dartmouth, much in the same way that Kalie Jackson '07 is a former softball player. Jackson posed the question "Is The Dartmouth not supposed to be encouraging school spirit and trying to get students to attend games?" ("Keep bias out of sportswriting," April 5). The answer is no, that is not even remotely what The Dartmouth is supposed to be doing.

Top 10 athletic feats of 2002-2003

Football tight end Casey Cramer '04 named first team AFCA All-America and second team AP selection. Softball pitcher Christine Quattrocchi '03 closed her career as the school's all-time leader in wins, strikeouts, earned run average and complete games. Mustafa Abdur-Rahim '04 earned All-American status at the outdoor NCAA Championships and was the outstanding performer at the Heps. Bradley Wall '02 won the men's slalom title and was second in the giant slalom to earn All-America honors at the Dartmouth Skiway hosted NCAA skiing championships. Men's soccer captured a share of Ivy League title by winning seven out of its last eight games of the season. Women's soccer made the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecutive season, but lost in the first round to Rhode Island.

Big Green track and field sets a pair of new records

The Dartmouth 4 x 800-meter relay broke the school record by nine seconds with a second-place finish of 8:44.32 at the joint ECAC/IC4A Track and Field Championship that concluded Sunday at Princeton Competing in the memorable 4 x 800 for the Big Green were Cecily Garber '03, Kersti Miller '02, Meaghan Olds '06 and Jessie Allen-Young '03.

Golfers take sixth at Ivy Champs

The Dartmouth men and women's golf teams struggled last weekend, as both teams finished sixth at the Ivy League Championships to cap off the spring season. Mark Christman '06 finished ninth overall in the men's championship with rounds of 75-77-80 -- 232, leading the way for the Big Green. "I felt I had a shot at winning the tournament individually, but I made some bad decisions on the final nine holes," Christman said.

Men's golf takes eighth-place finish

The Dartmouth men's golf team finished eighth at the New England Championship that concluded Sunday, March 13. The Big Green opened the tournament with 312 and then improved to 306 for a 36-hole total of 618. Kenan Yount '06 earned a top-15 finish, leading Dartmouth with 76-74 -- 150 on the par 72 Triggs Memorial golf course. "This fall I wasn't performing as well as I would have liked, but now I'm hitting the ball a lot farther and straighter," Yount said, "which has really helped me gain some more confidence and patience on the course." Dartmouth's other standout freshman, Chaki Kobayashi, was just two strokes behind Yount with a strong showing of 78-76 -- 152. Captain Jero Esteve '03 scored 80-76 -- 156, Mark Christman '06 fired 80-80 -- 160; and Stephen Gruber '05 walked away with 78-85 -- 163. "After not playing real golf for like, four months, I think we played pretty well.
